roba
Hi Knowledge bank,I'm about to repaint my chassis shortly after having it media blasted. What paint do you guys think is the best, or am I best getting it sprayed by a pro? If I don't get it sprayed, then I'm concerned the paint will be a miss match with the tub.I'm after a good finish, so painting it on myself doesn't really appeal to me, unless you say otherwise. And how about manifold/head paint. Any I can do myself, or again, just take them in to get sprayed by a pro?many thanks in advanced.Rob
BAC
I used POR15 paint from Frosts for the manifolds. It went on nice and still looks good 18 months later.http://www.frost.co.uk/automotive-paint-coating-electroplating/automotive-paint/por15-paints/por15-factory-manifold-grey-paint-473ml.htmlFrosts do chassis paint too....http://www.frost.co.uk/automotive-paint-coating-electroplating/automotive-paint/eastwood-paints.html?p=
RobPearce
When I had my Spitfire's chassis blast cleaned, I got them to powder coat it too. Looks lovely even after many years... of sitting in various garages waiting for me to finish the rebuild :(
timireson
hifor my chassis I used bilt hamber epoxy mastic stuff, then topcoated with body colour. theres been a few 'spanner/hammer/etc drops' which have knocked off the topcoat but not the epoxy stuff, seems fab. used eastwood chassis paint for the components, but so far not impressed as it seems to be peeling in places!! the bits I did with hamerite (when I ran out of chassis paint) seem to be varing much better. tim
rustbuckit2011
I sandblasted and POR15'd my chassis and suspension components . Fairly expensive, but it will only be done once. Applied two coats with a brush following directions for time frames etc. Then applied etch primer and topcoated with enamel. It doesn't need a topcoat, but Por15 isnt uv stable and I was getting a little worried, what with the amount of light in my garage and the amount of time the resto was taking! At the very least it would be worth top coating any chassis under the bonnet, that way you can leavethe engine exposed at car shows without the niggling worry.... Chris_68
Hi,I can do nothing but recommend POR15 rust proof and top coat products, I have never used their paint for manifolds but a friend did and it is as new two years later./Chris
Nick Moore
Another vote for POR-15 here. I used it on my GT6 chassis, followed by tie coat and body coloured enamel where it can be seen. I'll use it on my next project too, probably later this year.A couple of things I've found, though. On a chassis, brushing POR-15 produces a good finish, but if you're worried about brush marks on large flat surfaces, you can spray it. But if you spray, you'll have to use thinners. When I did this, I didn't have a mask and ended up with a truly epic headache. Whether was the volatiles in the paint or thinners, either spray it outside or get a mask with activated charcoal filters.Another thing - POR-15 doesn't stick to smooth metal. It likes sandblasted surfaces. It will stick to an etch-primed smooth surface OK though.
