Computer wiz needed

Recommended Posts

Anyone here a computer wiz. Finally my new lap top has arrived as my old one died. Two things, can a remote hard drive with USB to laptop fitting, be adapted to and would it work...to run on a mobile phone. Then how can I retrieve files and pics from a dead lap top...

I'm not computer wiz, but phones and PCs run on different operating systems.    There may be apps to convert the data as it is saved but that will slow things up.

The hard drive in your dead lap.top can, I think, be removed and the data transferred to a new drive, and you (or I!) Could probably do.it, but I'd go to a specialist.   Many businesses that sell PCs will.do.this for you.

Mike,

It depends on what failed on your old computer. If it was the hard drive, it's definitely a professional data recovery firm and they aren't cheap.

Anything else and as John D said the files should be recoverable. I would not suggest trying any of the usual retailers but rather one of the smaller specialist repair shops who will have the hardware  necessary to connect your drive.

There are a number of caveats. Transferring Outlook emails to a new machine with an updated version of Outlook can be a challenge. Also if your hard disc has been encrypted (unlikely) it may be impossible.

Good Luck

Howard

PS why are you trying to access a drive via your phone? There are a number of ways to do this which usually use a USB OTG cable and some expertise and black magic,

Because I have saved some files to a remote hard drive, saved from my original laptop

Thanks to all who offered advice. Modern technology amazes me .....I finally received my new lap top and after a couple of hours set up, I found that all my files and pics have been automatically transferred from my now defunct lap top . Now no need to transfer any data.....its all here in front of me.
