spax adjustment

i got some used working spax shocks a few months ago, and some new 400lb springs. after some use, im not happy. the ride is choppy. its not particuarly stiff, but it bounces around a lot and im sure its shaking my car to bits. the easy option is to change the springs, but im not sure thats the problem. im sure they contribute, but i'd like to set them properly before deciding the springs need to go. i really like the way it is in corners now. i have never been able to properly adjust the shocks, and its doing my nut. so i have 2 simple questions :

is there a start/stop point in the adjustment where the little knob will stop going round ? if so, i have never found it, depsite lots of fidding.

apparently they click on adjustment. how audible is this ? i have never noticed a clicking in either sound or feel.

on or off the car its no different. at the moment, theres is zero chance the shocks are even set the same, let alone set at a setting i want. if i cant sort it i will end up fitting some std shocks and 330lb lowered springs.

im pulling the car apart again this weekend to replace the gearbox, head gasket, hopefully fix some low compression and running problems. stop it burning oil, and hopefully set the shocks, maybe replace the front suspension.

cheers.

fizz, if you got choppy ness, then yoou got the shocks turned too stiff, go backwards[anti clockwise looking at the adjuster ] and turn as far back as you can get,

before they take up slack, it may be a full turn, BUT COUNT THE TURNS

and doo both , then ..count ..the turns on each one, ,.if you cant hear the clicks,

put money on, you got them turned up too far,

you will be ok on your car with 2-4 clicks, OR turn 1/4  a circle each time,

You must count the clicks,or ..feel.. them,
they were clicking when you got em!!!

if i turn them back as far as they go, will they eventually stop adjusting ? or do they just keep going round ? and there isnt any special way to turn them nobs is there, just put a screwdriver in and turn, dont need to press the nob in or adjust them standing on my head ? i'll try again tomorrow, thanks.

my problem is also that the shocks almost certainly arent both at the same spot relative to each other, hence why an extreme of adjustment would be a handy starting point to get them both equal.

400llb is a little stiff for a Spit? I have Spax all round and am running Moss Front Fast road springs with a spacer, they will not be any where near 400llb. I think Steve is only using 480 on his GT6?

the springs were very cheap in the first place from ebay, so i decided it was worth a punt. its no biggie to get some different ones if need be. but id rather sort the shocks before spending more money. i really like how tight the springs made the front end.

Ah the wanderer returns,

Last time you drove mine you liked it IIRC, 650 lb front springs ;) :P

My old 440 lbs are on Gaz's Spit and he likes them although he is having similar problems to Fizzy in that we can not feel any clicks in the adjusters????

I wonder if it isn't the choice of shock absorber that's the problem? I went from standard springs with Spax to 450lb/in springs with Konis and the ride improved! Even at their softest setting the Spax were harsh. Oh, I told myself the ride was sporty but in truth the new setup is far nicer.
