cammmy Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 Does anyone know if there are coilover kits available for the big saloons?Done some quick googling but haven't found any
piman Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 Hello Cammy, I'm guessing yo are looking for fronts? I can't say I've seen any but it is quite feasible to modify the struts to fit some.Alec
Andy Borris Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 You can modify the struts to "coilover", using one of these http://www.rallydesign.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=3450&osCsid=0172r895it4he9prunvcmqs470.But you can't use the top spring platform that's shown in the kit with a standard damper insert, the thread on top of the damper isn't long enough to allow the nut to fit in the mount, but the standard spring cup will work instead and that's fine.Or have a set of custom dampers made.....££££££'s!It can also cause problems with very fat tyre/wheels, esp. if they have a lot of inset, the bottom spring mount can rub.I'm doing this very job at the moment and hoping to convert to roller bearing mounts at the same time. It does open up a whole new world of spring rates and lengths.
Andy Borris Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 Should have added:If the spring can be "unseated" on full droop, then it (the spring) may not relocate back into the top seat correctly. It won't fall out, but it may make some alarming (to passengers) "bonging" noises! It's possible to fit a low rate helper spring, this will keep the main spring under tension at all times, may even act as a dual rate spring, the dual rate spring CW sells works very well.Or Weld a locating spigot into the top spring cup to keep the spring centralised. And finally, try wiring the spring into place.
cammmy Posted July 11, 2012 Author Posted July 11, 2012 Thanks for that. The coilovers on the 405 have keeper springs as the car is not road legal in NZ without them.Looks like it might not be worth it.
