Now doing the first test drives on my vitesse and I've noticed that when I brake moderately hard I get a fairly rapid clicking sound that I think is coming from the back of the car. The brakes appear to work reasonably well (although its prone to locking its rear wheels) I guess it forth coming MoT will tell ... So hard to judge the brakes when you only have modern cars for comparrison.

Any ideas on the clicking?

Thanks G

Is this clicking constant or only induced by braking? Can you invoke i by going round a corner for instance? As a general rule, clicking is usually UJs but what you've described doesn't sound like a UJ - if that makes sense :-)

The clicking can only be indused by moderately hard braking I can't make it click by turing or accelerating for example. However it is rotationally related as the clicking speed varies with car speed. Will look at the  the UJ's anyway. The car didn't do it 2 years ago before being laid up and I havn't touched any part of the brakes as part of its overhaul.

I would not trust a hydraulic system which has been idle for so long. Some seals will most likely have hardened and degraded through lack of movement and lubrication. Kwwp an eye out for any signs of leakage.
The noise "may" be caused by rust on the inside face of the drum, corresponding to the points where the drum was not in contact with the shoe.
Cheers,

I'm with Bill on this. I'd pull the rear drums and take a look at things ASAP. Oddball possibilities might include wheel cylinder clips loose or missing, or springs and shoe retainers no longer doing what they should or no longer BEING where they should...

...which reminds me that I need to do this on my 1200 saloon as well. No clicking, but I do get an occasional very light 'clunk' (for lack of a better term) after changing direction and then applying brakes! :o
