GreenV8Machine Posted February 6, 2008 Posted February 6, 2008 Is it easy to put princess 4 pots on the mk1 2000?Got some new spangly ones today ad dont know whether to over brake the GT or slap them on 2000, and take out the last ditch effort chain and anchor brick. ;D
James Posted February 6, 2008 Posted February 6, 2008 Nothing wrong with std 2000 brakes really - you need pads... I've got some police spec ferrodo ones to go on mine when mine get a bit more worn down...You need Stag brakes for most purposeful swap?
GreenV8Machine Posted February 6, 2008 Author Posted February 6, 2008 Hmmmmmmm, I must have a look at my 2000 brakes then. I once tried stopping from 90 downhill and it was not a happy bunny. Slowing staight, but it was rather like stoping the ark royal.I want to know am going to stop sharpish when tramming at 100+ or trackdaying.
DJB_Harvey Posted February 6, 2008 Posted February 6, 2008 Yes the pads can make a lot of difference ,but for the best results use the wilwood 4 pots that witor supplies.. ive tried stag brakes on my own car...no discernable difference in my opinion...cant comment on princess ones but Andy Roberts used to use them on his race car so must be fairly good?
GreenV8Machine Posted February 6, 2008 Author Posted February 6, 2008 hmmmmm, sounds good. If I can put em on the 2000 with some vented disks I will. I am tempted by the Hi Spec princess jobbies too for the GT6 if I can put these babys on the 2000.Theyre all sexy n new. lovely.
Richard B Posted February 6, 2008 Posted February 6, 2008 MkI or MkII 2000? Bear in mind the MkI has thinner discs and is more prone to over heating.
GreenV8Machine Posted February 6, 2008 Author Posted February 6, 2008 Really? This might explain after a few hard brakes they bearly work.I drive it like I stole it so I want good stoppers.
Englishbull Posted February 6, 2008 Posted February 6, 2008 Well from personal experiances my mk1 pi brakes far better than my stags
AlanChatterton Posted February 6, 2008 Posted February 6, 2008 I've put Stag brakes front and rear on my estate (towing a heavy van so wanted the extra stopping power)Best upgrade ever...........easy to fit and my god does it stop. (also used EBC pads and goodrich braided hoses)

Doug Thompson Posted February 6, 2008 Posted February 6, 2008 Decent stag disc's and good stag calipers with 1144 pads = excellent braking !!!
Richard B Posted February 6, 2008 Posted February 6, 2008 Borrowed from Chris Witor's site.Quote: Disc MkI 2000 to MB 104995, .350" x 9.750" 209348 RM in grade 14 grey cast ironDisc MkII, Late MkI and MkI PI, .500" x 9.750", 214004. So not all face-lift MkI's had them, at a guess, came in around the time of MkI PI's. To be honest I did'nt realize that the late MkI's had the 1/2'' discs. I'm sure my old 1967 face-lift had the thinner discs.
Greeks Posted February 6, 2008 Posted February 6, 2008 I get terrible fade on my semi-metallics ... overheat very quickly which puts an end to fun driving far too quickly :-( Interesting to hear the polar opposite opinion about fitting Stag brakes though! Who should I believe:Lee & DJB (PJ's husband?) or Doug and James ...???Maybe we should have a vote? :-D
GreenV8Machine Posted February 6, 2008 Author Posted February 6, 2008 whats better stag or princess? and whats the difference in fitting each oh mighty gods of the sixes
Doug Thompson Posted February 6, 2008 Posted February 6, 2008 No great advantage in the Princess calipers , piston size not much greater than standard calipers ditto for the pad , pretty sure they don't fit without mods , Stag setup simple , and as we proved coming down the Stelvio , they don't fade( with the right pads) Why make life complicated !!!

James Posted February 6, 2008 Posted February 6, 2008 I've not had any fade with my late MK1 setup - and I've tried pretty hard. No hint at all during the 10CR...
GreenV8Machine Posted February 6, 2008 Author Posted February 6, 2008 I gots da early mk1, with more weight to carry than you old boy ;)
AlanChatterton Posted February 6, 2008 Posted February 6, 2008 With std 2000 brakes, towing down hill it would not stop. With Stag brakes, its stops.Simple.If you use Stag brakes the discs are only about £30 each.If you use Princess calipers you'll have to fabricate a bracket and find some discs that will fit.............Go stag route..........
GreenV8Machine Posted February 6, 2008 Author Posted February 6, 2008 There it is then, stags n minty1155s
andy thompson Posted February 6, 2008 Posted February 6, 2008 Agreed.. good pads are the answer and poor ones will give you dreadful brakes in no time ....I fitted Volvo calipers and vented discs but at first used a stock pad .... wore them out in a day at the track!!!! Fitted Mintex and they would last six month with the same crazy use....If your pads feel like wax after a couple of hard stops , get some Mintex! That said I have to say using a caliper which has bigger pads (even if the piston area is technically the same ) make the brakes feel a lot better , all else being equal, pad material, ventilation from open spoke wheel etc.....Attached is my original Vented Disc conversion on my PI which used Volvo four pots (holes do not line up, machining required) and turned down Toyota celica discs. These are now on a friends car with Ferodo DS3000 (Aston Martin / Ferrari) pads and you can lock up R compound tyres at 100mph :P
andy thompson Posted February 6, 2008 Posted February 6, 2008 Or of course you could go the Paul Newman way...........
Greeks Posted February 7, 2008 Posted February 7, 2008 Bonkers! Are they just taking air from the front?
