MarkGT6 Posted Wednesday at 13:58 Share Posted Wednesday at 13:58 Hi all GT6MKII - 3.89:1 diff 518946 I am approx 3 times over tolerance for play on the differential input shaft, so it looks like it is time to start addressing the issue before I am left stranded. I don't really have the tools to do a rebuild myself, given the tolerances and precision needed. Who is the go-to person for Triumph diff rebuilds? -Mark
glang Posted Wednesday at 14:39 Share Posted Wednesday at 14:39 What play are you talking about Mark as its notoriously difficult to measure from outside the crownwheel to pinion backlash which is the important one. If its just the movement between the prop and the halfshafts then that includes play in the small planet and sun gears which isnt very important. Basically if your diff runs quiet (and critically doesnt lose oil) Id leave it alone as it will let you know if it needs attention... MarkGT6 Posted Wednesday at 15:07 Author Share Posted Wednesday at 15:07 Thanks. It is losing a little oil, but not much. With the take up in drive the backlash in the differential is very evident.
glang Posted Wednesday at 15:25 Share Posted Wednesday at 15:25 ok definitely keep on top of the oil loss as only contains 0.57L and low oil causes early death but luckily the oil seals are relatively easy to change. Pity about the backlash as major expense because you'll probably want new quality bearings all the way though which will then mean reshimming everything and even with an expert theres no guarantee it'll ever be as quiet☹️
MarkGT6 Posted Wednesday at 16:41 Author Share Posted Wednesday at 16:41 😞 Yes, that's why I thought it was better to leave well alone and look for an expert. I'll try Mike Papworth if he's still reconditioning diffs.
glang Posted Wednesday at 17:03 Share Posted Wednesday at 17:03 You might get away with a partial rebuild if everything else is good. The yellow metal thrust washers 7 can wear so the planet gears 6 run further apart from the sun gears 5 giving more backlash...
MarkGT6 Posted Thursday at 08:33 Author Share Posted Thursday at 08:33 That explanation has helped me to understand it better. Would that still run the risk of a noisy diff with a partial rebuild? Thank you for taking the time to post the diagram and explain, it is very much appreciated
glang Posted Thursday at 08:55 Share Posted Thursday at 08:55 Why diffs make noise seems to be a bit of a grey area but if youve not touched the bearings and their preload or changed the alignment of the pinion and crownwheel theres no reason why there should be any change in noise level. If your problem was found to be just those thrust washers the repair could be very simple as I think the axle pin can be removed in situ so allowing access to the planet gears and thrusts. However there will inevitably be wear to other components so after all the work to get to that stage a lot of people go the whole hog....
