WIMPUS Posted December 28, 2016 Posted December 28, 2016 Hi, can anyone recommend a good paint for the brake drums on my Spitfire ?I painted them the last 3 years with heat resistant paint, but it flakes off after a while and the drums go rusty (not so nice). So what paint to use ? Wim Quote
JohnD Posted December 28, 2016 Posted December 28, 2016 ALL the high temperature paints have on the tin/can, in tiny, tiny type, words to the effect they must be applied to bare metal. My experience, with manifolds has been the same. They are not worth using, unless on brand new kit.Use your car more, so that road dirt hides the rust.John Quote
Hogie Posted December 28, 2016 Posted December 28, 2016 Hi Wimpus, the High Temp Paint needs to be cured, after application, at a high temp. This works naturally on the exhaust systems with the high temp flowing through. If you paint your drums use a hot air gun over the paint to help the curing. You will know if you apply to much heat.Roger Quote
32valves Posted December 28, 2016 Posted December 28, 2016 I used the high temperature paint from Frost''s on my rear brake drums and it has lasted pretty well. I scrubbed them with a wire brush then cleaned with paint thinners before applying the paint. Still looks OK after 8 yrs. Quote
ferny Posted December 28, 2016 Posted December 28, 2016 Normal exterior metal paint. No need for high temperature stuff at all. Same for calipers as well. Quote
Sheepy Posted December 30, 2016 Posted December 30, 2016 Stove paint! I used some on an exhaust manifold, it was good stuff. (Will have a look at the make on the tin) Quote
