Seals between caliper mounting plate and v. link??

After having taken apart my front suspension end, I noticed a rubber seal between the caliper mounting plate and vertical link. Looking at Rimmers site : http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-GRID007840 they show a water/ dirt seal (no longer available 138559) and an O ring (138051). Canleys do the o ring but there is no mention of a water/ dirt seal.  Can some elaborate on this and is the o ring sufficient?

think the basic concept is to add water protection   to protect the inner felt seal from water ingress getting in the inner bearing.

dont know what to use to make the 'guard' but a good quality sealant should be ok on the caliper mount bore/face
