Stuart Wilson
Well I've eventually got the engine for the Moss on an engine stand at work ready to take to pieces and rebuild. Only I think 10 years since the engine that was in the car died on the RBRR This one is a "replacement" one Edited September 20 by Stuart Wilson
Stuart Wilson
1500 spitfire engine which will be getting a strip down and see what it needs. I'm thinking it'll need a fair amount. It'll be fixed to an overdrive gearbox, which will also need checking over. The main gearbox I'm reasonably comfortable doing but never done anything with an overdrive. So it might be sent to a specialist. Any recommendations for this?
Stuart Wilson
Sunday saw the start of the strip down. Should hopefully get a little bit done most days/nights after work. Trying to remember to take pictures as I go plus keeping a note of parts I'll need as it all comes to bits

If the OD is "known good" open it up, clean it, clean filters and put it back together - carefully. If it's unknown or bad - specialist. They are not impossible to work on, but any major work needs the proper set-up and testing. Are OD services still about? They used to be decent https://www.overdrive-repairs.co.uk/

Stuart Wilson
Little bit more done tonight, not masses, but it all adds up. Followers have seen better days End float 19thou
thescrapman
Looking at the followers the camshaft isn’t going to be great. pulled a similar set out of a 2500 engine, couple of the lobes would have struggled to open the valves
Stuart Wilson
Plan has always been a new camshaft and followers anyway
yorkshire_spam
I heartily recommend cams and followers from Newman cams. Not cheap, but good quality.

Stuart Wilson
Am I correct in thinking there are 3 main diff' ratios in Herald/Spitfire 4.11/1 3.6/1 3.8/
yorkshire_spam
Yes, 3.63, 3.89 and 4.11. On my 1500 with OD box I run 3.63.
Stuart Wilson
A later job will be see what I've got fitted and look to change if necessary. Get the engine done then it'll be gearbox and diff
yorkshire_spam
There's also a "rare" 3.27, used in Swiss Spitfires and GT6s and the 4.875 and 4:55 from the Heralds. But as stated the 3.63, 3.89 and 4.11 are the common ones.
Stuart Wilson
Knowing my luck with the Moss based on a Herald I'll probably have a 4.875 or a 4.55 Which would definitely need changing
Stuart Wilson
I'm off and actually at home for a day, so had a look in to the Moss garage
Stuart Wilson
While in the garage I uncovered the gearbox I acquired at about same time as the engine, so about 9 or 10 years ago. Yes it will need checked over as will the D type overdrive. What are people's opinion of fitting this gearbox to the 1500 engine? Or am I better with single rail?
