help on trunnions - please

A mate of mine has a problem with the front suspension.

He is putting new shocks on his 1968 TR250 but has run into some problems with the trunnions, and would like to know whether other people has encountered similar probs.

Car is being rebuild and has currently no engine in it -which means there is no weight on the suspension.

When the spring compressor is on the front roadspring the trunnion works fine and turns with no resistance. However when springcompressor is released the trunnion is stuck and cannot turn.

We cannot figure out why this is happening, but suspect that the new shockers might be to long, and thus allowing the trunnion to touch the plate between the lower wishbones (hope this makes sense.) The new shocks seems to be 1.2 – 1.5 inches longer than the old when stretched to the max.

Does anybody have the correct measure for the shocks when stretched? Please

With shame I must admit that they are standard (probably made in india) shocks. Not my choice - then again - it is not my car.

It is the same shock as on TR5 and TR6.

I am looking for a measure on the shock fully extended . anybody got one the could take a measure on?

I have heard from several people that the shocks being sold at the moment are too long which also means you do not get full upward bounce.
But this should not effect the trunnion. It should always be free through the full swing of the axle.
Have you put new springs in?
Are they the correct length and load?
How much do you have to compress the spring before the trunnion is free?
Even if the trunnions are free with the engine in it is dangerous to have them locking up on full bounce.

here´s the mate (with the china/india shocks....) .........

thanks for the answers so far

the spring are the same std ones as before

the setup works fine when using the old shocks

it´s only about 0.5" i have to compress to clear the trunion

the part that toutches the plate between the wishbones (well actually the seat for the spring on the plate) is the part where the "steering-stop-thing" on the trunions are.
sorry for my poor english explaning !

i know the easy way is to buy some koni, or whatever but i hate to give up without finding the answers !

so it turned out the china shocks where to long, about 1-1,5".

so it really could be a problem for others who might have changed their shocks with car on the ground, or if they just changed and lowered the car without cheking the movement of the wheels !!!
