Oht Posted February 7, 2019 Posted February 7, 2019 I have just rebuilt the front suspension on my 13/60 and bought a grease gun from toolstation to oil the trunnions. Apart from oil coming out of any part of the gun with a thread, I half expected that, it did not seem to work. I made sure that the grease nipples were ok (new ones) the gun was pumping as oil was coming out by the grease nipple but none out of the seals on the trunnions. Could any one with experience of doing this offer some help or recommend a decent grease gun please. thanks Steve Quote
daver clasper Posted February 7, 2019 Posted February 7, 2019 I have found that sometimes with cheaper grease guns it helps to have and extra hand to press the end fitment firmly down and square to the nipple while pumping, to avoid this. Also if car is jacked up, wheels off the ground, then less load on trunnions, which helps a bit. Cheers, Dave Quote
Hogie Posted February 7, 2019 Posted February 7, 2019 Hi Steve, Not all grease guns can pump oil - as you have found it leaks. I think you need to establish what nipple sockets you have as some are tighter than other. What grade of oil are you using. Do your trunnions require oil or grease. I have a TR4A that originally used grease but TRiumph later changed it to EP90 or some such. I prefer grease but others like the oil. Roger Quote
RobPearce Posted February 7, 2019 Posted February 7, 2019 All Heralds should take EP90 - definitely 13/60 should. It's common for the oil not to pass through old trunnions, especially if a previous owner has greased them, but that shouldn't be the case if you've just rebuilt it. Did you check the drillings in the vertical links were clear before re-assembling? Did you fill the trunnions with oil before fitting? Quote
daver clasper Posted February 7, 2019 Posted February 7, 2019 In the past I have read that a large plastic syringe will work (with nipple removed), as doesn't need the same pressure, as say a U/J, to fill/escape?. Dave Quote
Dannyb Posted February 7, 2019 Posted February 7, 2019 I always remove the nipple and use an oil gun. Quote
daver clasper Posted February 7, 2019 Posted February 7, 2019 Interesting. So, possibly no need to buy an expensive grease gun, with a couple of cheap alternatives?. Dave Quote
TedTaylor Posted February 8, 2019 Posted February 8, 2019 Where I have had a problem with sealing and oil escaping down a thread when under pressure I have used PTFE tape on the thread. MUT Quote
Oht Posted February 8, 2019 Author Posted February 8, 2019 Hi all, Some answers, oil is EP 90, Trunions were clean no grease at all and the nipples were as well wth free movement of the ball bearing. I tried using the oil container, the type with a tube for a spout. I put a tube into the spout and the other end into the hole where the nipple goes. I could see tiny bubbles moving through the tubing into the trunion, but I don’t know how much went in. A YouTube video shows a guy using grease gun and he is topping up the oil and says when you see old oil coming out of the bottom of the seal that job done and that’s what I want to achieve. Thanks for all the replies Steve Quote
Oht Posted February 8, 2019 Author Posted February 8, 2019 Hi Ted, That is what I will do next, the oil is coming out of five places one of which is a nozzle on the cap of the gun which has a loose ball bearing in. I am assuming you can use this to fill the gun with grease but the oil is pouring out of this which I will deal with. Quote
glang Posted February 8, 2019 Posted February 8, 2019 +1 for a syringe. Im never, ever going to mess about with trying to put oil in a grease gun again! Quote
daver clasper Posted February 8, 2019 Posted February 8, 2019 Wow. With these alternatives, I think I will go back to trying oil again, rather than the grease, I've been using for a while!. Cheers, Dave Quote
Velocita Rosso Posted February 8, 2019 Posted February 8, 2019 Before I changed to trunnion less set up ,I just used a normal 1/2pt thumb operated oil can with solid spout having a rounded `nose` on it...and that fitted snuggly into the hole where the grease nipple screwed In a few thumb pumps they were seeping from the rubber dust seal....(£2.00 tops) Quote
Oht Posted February 9, 2019 Author Posted February 9, 2019 Hi All, I have just oiled the trunions and it was so quick and easy, I used an oil can, thanks Danny. Did offside first and was not sure where the oil was coming from initially but then saw it had come out of the seal, the nearside took just one pump. So thanks for the replies. One other thing though, this is the firs time I have posted on the new site so am unaware of the size of images I can post, info on this would be of help. Thanks Steve Quote
