StagNL Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 Can anyone tell me how thin the spanner should be for removing the solenoid from a J-type overdrive? I have a 25mm spanner measured at 25.4mm - just right - with thickness currently at 7.6mm. Car unfortunately not close at hand to measure gap.Julian Quote
StagNL Posted July 14, 2015 Author Posted July 14, 2015 Thank you Richard. I'll either try grinding down the existing spanner or make a special tool at 5mm maximum.Julian Quote
Steve AKA vitessesteve Posted July 15, 2015 Posted July 15, 2015 Canley Classics say you need a 1 inch spanner no thicker than 3mm: http://www.canleyclassics.com/technical-archive/the-j-type-overdrive/I managed to find a set of thin spanners - I think they were said to be for motorbikes or transmissions work. They look as if they are cut from sheet steel rather than forged.Like these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/7-pc.....;hash=item51cc2b34c5 but I got mine at an autojumble for £10 Quote
StagNL Posted July 15, 2015 Author Posted July 15, 2015 I have found a 1" spanner and have ground it back to 5 mm. Will check in a few days whether or not the thickness is thin enough.Julian Quote
Richard B Posted July 15, 2015 Posted July 15, 2015 Well the 5mm works on the solenoids I've had to change. Stag, 2.5 & Dolomite 1500. Quote
StagNL Posted July 16, 2015 Author Posted July 16, 2015 Trial fitted it today and it fits. However there is very little clearance and the left side exhaust needs to come off in order to really get a good grab at it.Julian Quote
