Moorzee Posted August 16, 2014 Posted August 16, 2014 My wipers and "air con" system have been playing up for the couple of hours I've had the spitfire, peculiarly the rev counter stopped working at the same time and started at the same time as the heater and wipers kicked in again???? This must be coincidence no?Anyhow, are there any tips and tricks for keeping a nice connection on these old skool fuses? Quote
LouisW Posted August 16, 2014 Posted August 16, 2014 Many people upgrade to a 'blade' style fuse box (wimpus on the forum did this) as it allows you to have many more fuses with a better connection. Also helps with problem solving as all electricals aren't on 3 fuses. I believe on the triumphspitfire website theres a stock fuse guide so you can see which each fuse operates. Quote

LouisW Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 I don't think he made one but I recall seeing a pretty simple guide before. Think there's a blade fusebox on eBay whichfits into the originals hole. It's late, I'm tired and on my phone so sorry for vagueness. I'll have a better look tomorrow for you. This being said, original fuse box isn't all that bad! Connectors just sometimes get loose causing a bad connection (believe it or not!!) Quote
nang Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 And check that your earth connections( the black wires) are nice and clean and tight. ;DTony. Quote
WIMPUS Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 Did someone call out my name ? ::) ;DWell i've got rid of the old fuse box because otherwise i needed to add fuses between the wires and then the fuses would be everywhere. Wanted all the fuses in 1 place. So i've cut the piece of the old fuse box, where the wiring loom goes through and left that in place .But then i needed to cut some metal out of the bulkhead and make a surround for the blade fuse boxes.I now do have 2 x 6 blade fuse boxes and they are all full :o (was planning in the future for a bigger one !).Well need to search for pictures, normally they where on my facebook, but that's dead now :oOtherwise i will need to make new ones :)As for the wiring.. i left the 3 fuses alone, so i still have the 3 fuses and all the rest are the extra bits i've added. Didn't want to mess with it all under the dash, because it all worked back then. Quote

I went and "jiggled" the fuses and working for now, I don't understand why the rev counter would be affected though? I thought that was just a mechanical thing from the gearbox???? Just out of interest, could moody fuses contribute to a non functioning speedo as well? If not any tips on getting the fine stopping needle to tell me how slow I am going working again folks? :D Quote
yorkshire_spam Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 On a 1500 the rev counter is electrical, fed along with many other items (gauges, wiper motor, heater motor etc etc) from a common fuse. This might be useful:(http://www.andystanton.co.uk/spitfire/oilybits.htm) Quote
Mj17 Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 Fuses are cheap so grab a handful and start of by replacing them all as a matter of course. I've had fuses look fine from the outside and even have continuity when the car's parked but when I popped them out found the wire was no longer soldered to the end cap. Stationary, even idling the wire touched the cap and made the circuit. Driving and going over bumps it would wobble and keep making/breaking constact. While you have the old fuses out check the terminals carefully. I've also had something get the fusebox hot enough to melt part of the plastic - but not blow the corresponding fuse. This resulted in the plastic running around one of the fusebox blades, queue very odd behaviour where SOME of the items off of one fuse not getting power (those on the now insulated blade) but the others (on the other blade as ate same end of the fuse) still working fine. That one had me scratching my head for a while I can tell you! Quote

smithy Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 Think of it like the tube map. Central Line to Marble Arch, Northern line to your destination.See the number 72's in the middle? Those are the fuses. Edgeware road. The rev counter (tachometer - number 5) is intermittent 'cos you've got problems with the signals on the Hammersmith and City.Simples. Quote

Ta..... :) Now where is the subwoofer fuse and the electric soft-top motor????????? (clap) Quote
