GT6Craig Posted November 1, 2008 Posted November 1, 2008 Does anyone know where the horn relay should be located? If its anything like my fusebox it wont even exist in my car. Right now my fusebox consists of 3 inline fuses with masses of wires coming off in all directions - its okay though, i have it all under control - and a brand new box ready to wire in! but where shall i stick it? Where would the fusebox be originally?Back to the horn relay, my horn just randomly beeps, sometimes uncontrollably, much to the annoyance of my neighbours..........so ive disconnected it for now, i plan to re-wire it as finding the fault in the wire will be murder if its not the relay.cheers guys!
GT6boy Posted November 1, 2008 Posted November 1, 2008 The fuse box (that's a bit grand- it was just a 3 fuse holder!) would have sat above and behind the battery. I'd suggest yours has been removed-they do get broken, so perhaps the PO removed it and fitted in-line types instead? The horn going all random-comedy operation sounds like there is an intermittent short in the steering wheel boss arrangement. The constant turning of the wheel an poorly aligned/worn steering column arrangements make for wear with the steering column 'surround' which as its aluminium just get worn into dust which falls onto the steering column rotary contact. When there is sufficient conductive filings- bingo, the horn bleeps via the short circuit which is then burnt off by the heat/current :).
GT6Craig Posted November 2, 2008 Author Posted November 2, 2008 Sounds like thats whats happened. Ill install the new one in the location you mentioned!I dont think the horn issues is down to the connections in the steering column. The horn was previously installed away from the steering wheel on a bracket attached to the dash. I removed the crappy switch and routed the wire up the column to inside of the wheel, which i then attached to the existing centre bit. The horn worked as it should and as i installed the wire myself i made sure it was good and not broken. Whilst driving, the horn came on continously and even though i pulled off the push button from the centre of the steering wheel (breaking the contact) the horn still kept on going! i had to disconnect it! This leads me to believe its the relay or a knackered wire somewhere deeper into the loom................
