Simoneg Posted July 7, 2009 Posted July 7, 2009 Anyone have experience of fitting a D-type overdrive to a Toledo? (I imagine 1300/1500 Dolly would be the same). The original non-OD Toledo box is mounted to the front subframe on a bracket fitted to the back of the box but there is precious little clearance between the back of the OD box and the front of the D-type overdrive housing to fit a gearbox mounting in the same position. Neither the original bracket nor a standard Spitfire/Vitesse OD mounting bracket (159656) fits here, but I guess it might be possible to fabricate a suitable plate. As I recall, this is not a problem with the J-type box, which has much more clearance at this point and I think uses the same mounting bracket as the non-OD box. Also, any tips for swapping flywheels? Original flywheel is badly scored. I have a spare flywheel from a similar Toledo engine but wonder if these are a straight swap or need to be balanced somehow with the crank? ... Also an earlier attempt to swap clutches between apparently identical (1972) 10-spline Toledo gearboxes resulted in excessive travel in the clutch activating lever, meaning that I couldn't disengage the clutch properly. The original clutch assembly seemed to be slightly "thicker" than the second one. The only way to cure this at the time was to put the original semi-worn out clutch back in but it is now almost down to the rivets so has to be sorted out. Wondering if one of the clutches could originally have been off a Herald 1360 (listed by Rimmers as GCK272), perhaps with a matching Herald flywheel, whilst the early Toledo clutch assembly is listed as GCK273. Anyone know if these are interchangable? Any suggestions gratefully received. Simon
beefertoo Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 i've got one in my tolly. came from a spit but sholud be the same. no probs with the tolly you need a crossmember from a o/d dolly and a prop from a non o/d dolly. i to make a dead simple mounting bracket for the rear box mount. the only prob is the slave cyl 'may' be a different size as mine is a little close to the floor on takeup. dont know about herald verses tolly clutches but i would think most are swappable apart from early to late covers and plates. if your close to blackpool your welcome to come and have a look at mine if you want.craig
Simoneg Posted July 8, 2009 Author Posted July 8, 2009 Many thanks. I had completely forgotten about this cross member which fortunately I had saved from a scrapped Dolomite a couple of years ago - complete with the original J-type overdrive mount which looks like it should fit the D-type. Found these bits lurking in a corner of the garage! There even seem to be pre-drilled mounting holes in the Toledo's bodywork. Will be interesting to see how the clutch works out. Rimmers suggest that GCK273 and GCK272 should be interchangeable but guess I'll have to try it and see. Spare tolly propshaft now shortened, balanced and fitted with a new centre bearing/carrier (by J W Engineering, Bexleyheath Kent - excellent service) so hope to reassemble in the next few days. Thanks for offering to let me look at your car but I'm in Kent so not very feasible, I'm afraid! Simon
Simoneg Posted July 13, 2009 Author Posted July 13, 2009 Oh dear, after all that the overdrive doesn't work - thanks again to a Fleabay seller for what was described as being in "good working condition from a recently driven car". Cleaned filter/magnets (these were stuffed full of metal filings), cleaned relief and operating valves, checked solenoid and adjusted operating valve lever as per Triumph maintenance manual, but all it does is to try to cut in briefly when cold, then nothing. So guess it'll be another £200-£300 for a recon unit. Recommendations anyone? Simon
