Twig863 Posted January 18, 2015 Posted January 18, 2015 A bit of a newbie question , but does anyone use a dash indicator light for a j type overdrive? ... I was wondering if it could be done , or if someone already has a wiring diagram for one?Something as a reminder that you are in overdrive ? Quote
thescrapman Posted January 18, 2015 Posted January 18, 2015 We had one on the dash of our Mk1 2000 "Gertie" when we owned it.Easy to do with either an a-type or a j-type.Just put a double bullet connector in place of the single one where the output from the OD column stalk exits down by your knees, then run an additional wire into the indicator light and from there to earth. It will illuminate when you engage overdrive.Other option is a "Smart Controller" that auto matically disengages in when you select first or second and does not re engage until you move the lever out and back into overdrive.CheersColin Quote
Twig863 Posted January 18, 2015 Author Posted January 18, 2015 Thanks Colin , sounds like I can pick it up in the centre console on my TR ..and feed it to a suitable LED in the dash.Cheers Quote

JohnD Posted January 18, 2015 Posted January 18, 2015 Mine is on the steering wheel, together with an on-off press switch. It's connected by a length of three-core "curly-whirly" flex, as for telephones and available from Farnell/CPC.Two cores provide the O/d connection and the third an earth for the indicator lamp - a diode.John Quote
Hogie Posted January 19, 2015 Posted January 19, 2015 Hi Tim, check carefully the wires from the column switch as some cars switch +12V and other switch Earth (0+).Roger Quote

You can either wire the bulb across the relay coil (e.g. from +12V to the column switch) or across the solenoid (from the relay contact to ground). The J-type fitment does not have a relay. The switches are all on the +12V side. You would wire the bulb across the solenoid (switches to ground) as suggested earlier.I think the A-type wiring matches the D-type. Quote
Twig863 Posted January 19, 2015 Author Posted January 19, 2015 Thanks for all the responses, I guess it will be check with the multimeter first before then wiring in looking for the switching side... Nice little project for next Sunday. Quote
