overdrive compatibility

Another quick question for the overdrive experts.

Would a J-type overdrive from a Volvo P1800/amazon etc fit a Spitfire?  I know the adaptor plate would need to be the spitfire item (no problem there) but would other bits need changes.

Something at the back of my mind tells me that the rear housings may be different ......

From what I remember reading it should fit with the appropreate Triumph adaptor but Volvo used a different ratio so overall gearing would be different to using Spitfire unit (though better or worse I know not).

Thanks guys - I will take a trip up to see my 'source' and get the details.

Only problem with that is I'll end up helping out with a mate's Volvo project and will come back covered in crud from head to toe.  The guy may be a bit of a technical guru but his workshop is manky.
