Hugoagogo Posted March 29, 2010 Posted March 29, 2010 Okay, i know sweet FA about overdrive and it has stopped working. I just switched into it the other day and seem to recollect a slight burning smell, but cant be sure. Does not work at all now.Is there anything i need to replace that is obvious or any checks i should make before i do anything drastic?ThanksScotty
JohnD Posted March 29, 2010 Posted March 29, 2010 Two failure modes for overdriove:1/ mechanical2/ electricalthe second more common and after a "burning smell" more likely. Gearbox cover off, and check the wiring.John
rotoflex Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 Burning smell is scary, as if it's electrical & heats up the wires, it can melt other nearby wires unrelated to the overdrive, start fires, summon the faceless ones from beyond the gulf of time, etc.The first thing I'd do would be disconnect the overdrive circuitry from the car's electrics.Which car is this? Is it a GT6 Mk3 with the overdrive switch in the gear shift knob? There are many reports of the wiring cooking in the hollow gear lever handle. If the OD switch is the column-mounted stalk, it is scary because you could cook headlight & turn signal wiring running along side it.

lordleonusa Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 For reasons known only to Triumph, (I blame the bean counters), they omitted the relay on the J-type overdrive, which to my mind was an error, the cables going up the hollow gear lever are too light a gauge to carry the required current without there being a relay to protect the cables. It is realtively simple to fit a relay into the circuit.L
