lancepar Posted August 23, 2010 Posted August 23, 2010 Hi,What is likely to be the reason for a sluggish engagement of a ‘D’ type overdrive? The car was like it when I got it and the O/D works fine otherwise, but I am told it should engage in about three seconds. Is it likely to be out of adjustment of the operating plunger? Can this be checked easily?Anything simple I can check or try first?Any links to further reading on this subject?Cheers 8)
CHRIS211083 Posted August 23, 2010 Posted August 23, 2010 Hi, first thing is to Check the oil level in the box????
lancepar Posted August 23, 2010 Author Posted August 23, 2010 Topped the oil up not long ago, only took a squirt of the oil can, didn't make any differnce.Suppose I could drain the oil from the overdrive and gearbox and try a complete change of oil. 8)
CHRIS211083 Posted August 23, 2010 Posted August 23, 2010 It cant hurt, what oil are you replacing it with???
lancepar Posted August 24, 2010 Author Posted August 24, 2010 Well the 'H'manual says SAE 90EP, assume this is ok, don't know what's already in there and because I had some 80EP in an oilcan I only added a squirt when I checked it.What should I be using? 8)
CHRIS211083 Posted August 24, 2010 Posted August 24, 2010 My haynes manual will say the same as yours sae90 sounds about right. Let us know how you go on?
drofgum Posted August 25, 2010 Posted August 25, 2010 lancepar,SAE80EP won't hurt anything; it is just a little thinner. Neither the gearbox nor the OD will show any difference except under the very highest temperatures.Somewhere recently I saw a chart of various measures of viscosity. It turns out that normal engine oils and gear oils are very close in viscosity. The ranges overlap when they are compared. Cheers, Paul
