Overdrive Propshaft

I'm currently rebuilding a MkIV with Overdrive, and have been looking at propshafts on eBay - I've noticed that there are 2 different types.

The prop that came with my Spit is of the solid type with those thin, (presume collapsible?) spacers at the diff end, but on eBay I see a many sliding joint type props being advertised as overdrive. I thought these were only necessary in cars where rear diffs were mounted on a moveable axle, hence the need for flex in the prop, or have I missed something?

Thanks  :X

How many propeller shaft designs did Triumph use?
I have one with universal joints rigidly attached at each end, one with plain splined sliding joint section and one with the splined sliding section fitted with rollers.
Now there is mention of a strap drive version.

Any more?

My non overdrive 1500 had a pot joint propshaft.  The replacement which came with the overdrive from an outfit in Fillongley had a sliding joint.  Interestingly for me, a slight whirring noise disappeared after fitting the (reconditioned) replacement propshaft.  I suspect the cause was the pot joint even though it had only done about 40000 miles.  I did notice when I had it on the bench that it seemed a bit notchy.

Thanks guys, understand the different types of prop better now, but in practice will it mean that installing a strap joint instead of sliding will smash my overdrive to bits, or is it unlikely to make a difference?
