2009poolesparky Posted March 18, 2012 Posted March 18, 2012 Ive just got the 4 gears on my 71 , mk4 spit.how hard would it be, and how expensive would it be to convert it so it has an overdrive too?Alex
Clive Posted March 18, 2012 Posted March 18, 2012 Need:An overdrive gearbox with overdrive attached (the gearbox mainshaft is different, you cannot just bolt an OD on your box)mountings, shorter propshaft, few electrical bits/switch, angle drive, speedo cable and some other odds and ends. Best to get a GOOD complete conversion, the small bits and bobs are always expensive. Available secondhand from £300 upwards approx.Take a good day of time, allow a weekend if unsure.
2009poolesparky Posted March 18, 2012 Author Posted March 18, 2012 just found this on ebay, looks good?????http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Triumph-spitfire-gearbox-/300677394099?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item4601c4eeb3
thebrookster Posted March 18, 2012 Posted March 18, 2012 Downside to going for an ebay option is that you have no idea what condition the box is in.Personally, if I was doing it I would get in touch with the various triumph places and see what kinda prices they will do, I don't know if they knock a bit off if you give them the old box in return? I know it is the more expensive route, however you can then be reasonably certain of getting a decent box that will work, and some form of guarantee, which is what swings it in my favour. Also it may be possible to go through the likes of spitbitz/spitfire graveyard/etc, they may be able to supply something cheaper than recon, but may be able to give you an idea of the condition of the box?

aar0sc Posted March 18, 2012 Posted March 18, 2012 Yes, swap the prop for a shortened one and the clutch for a coarsely splined one. I've got both ready to go on mine, but I know the overdrive doesn't work (it's missing a rather large lump of itself), so I'm going to: Make some money, Have it reconned :)
Clive Posted March 18, 2012 Posted March 18, 2012 Ah with that gearbox the 1500 std prop will be the correct length. Will need the mounting hardware etc, and as aaron points out a different clutch plate.

Interesting (I've got a three rail overdrive gearbox, plus three three rail non O/D boxes, and of course the knackered single rail in my car). So my Mk3 overdrive prop's a tad useless then? :B
