Petefeet Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 I have a 68 gt6 with an overdrive switch on the steering column, I need to reverse the car but the book says it can do serious damage reversing with the OD engaged. I have no idea if it's on or not?Is there anyway I can check. With the engine off and the lever up there is a clicking from the gear box when I move the gear lever left and right , it doesn't click when the lever is down, not sure if that helps.Ta Pete Quote
GT6 Jonesy Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 I think the best and safest way to test it is to make sure the inhibitor switch is working. This is a safety switch on top of the gearbox the stops overdrive kicking in while reversing with the overdrive switch on. A simple test is with the ignition on and the car in neutral move the gear stick to the right without putting it in gear and trip the switch, you should hear the relay and solonoid click. Then move the gearstick to the left and repeat the process, if the inhibitor is working and adjusted correctly you will not hear the relay or solonoid trip. Hope that makes sense Quote
Petefeet Posted September 5, 2014 Author Posted September 5, 2014 I took the gt6 on a very short run today, about 1500yds before running out of petrol, i can hear the solenoid clicking when the stick is moved left and right but it does still go into reverse. It goes into reverse with a real fight when the do switch is up and down and when driving it made no difference to the revs when I switched the switch. I am thinking that perhaps the do is knackered, I am also concerned about how hard it is to get into reverse, not sure if I just need to get use to it or if it's the synchromesh etc.Are there any companies providing good recon gearboxes, I have see mike papworth a name being mentioned on old posts, is he still doing gearboxes? I am in Northern Ireland so a reliable person in NI would save delivery costs. Quote

DanM Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 1500 yards really isn't enough to test an od. The car needs to be in 3rd or 4th gear for od to work if inhibitors are working correctly and it can take a couple of seconds to kick in. Before going for a recon, check the gear oil level and the solenoid arm adjustment.Reversing should cause no probs as the od cannot be engaged in reverse (hence the inhibitor switches) difficult gear selection could well be the bushes on the remote being knackered Quote
