Stodders Posted January 14, 2013 Posted January 14, 2013 I am sure that this has been covered before but I haved searched the forum and cannot find the answer. Can anyone tell me whether I can remove a D type overdrive from a Vitesse without removing the entire gearbox? It tools like it maybe possible but there must be someone out there who has tried it before
Deleted User Posted January 14, 2013 Posted January 14, 2013 I'd fear not. I've got the transmission cover off at present (changing the gearbox mount—there is not much room to get at the bolts let alone remove the OD unit. I recall seeing another post that said it is possible to remove the gearbox and OD as a unit however (ie leave engine in place).
Pete Lewis Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 yes it does come off as a separate unit but you need to lift the rear end a long way, look for fan fouling rad etc.and hose stretchgetting it off will be a far easier than putting it back which will either be a doddle or a nightmare , read in the manual about aligning the drive and one way hub splines inside the unit you only need to sneeze and it all moves , also the position of the oil pump cam or the follower wont ride over it,having and old mainshaft tapered to make a lead is most useful to make alignment easy , it can be a pain to refit out on the floor,, but in car may test your patience , pete
Gt6s Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 I removed and refitted the J type on my big T boxed Gt6 in situ, no issues.Laurence
Stodders Posted January 16, 2013 Author Posted January 16, 2013 Thanks for the advice guys, It did look like it should come out OK but looking again it does look like the back end will have to be raised a long way. If it is going to damage the radiator or I have to take the radiator out it might be best if I took the whole lot out. Worst thing is that I have only just put it in. Running on axle stands it worked fine a few times and now it just refuses to engage. All of the electrics are OK and the solenoid pulls in to the right place. Before it comes out I am going to check the pressure as this might give me some clues.
Stodders Posted January 20, 2013 Author Posted January 20, 2013 Further to my last post. Before taking the whole lot out again thought I would try to find out why it won't work. Have made up an adaptor to check the pressure and it is a bit erratic. Sits about 200psi when not engaged and drops to 150psi when I engage the solenoid. Seeing as it is supposed to be around 450psi it explains why nothing happens, but does anybody have a clue what I should be looking for?

Andy Flexney Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 if it is low pressure then it could be you need a new pump i.e. piston or the reservoir spring has weakened. Most likely the pump.AndyF
Pete Lewis Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 assuming the gauze filter and the magnetic rings are all clean you can have a look at the relief valve and its spring, then its piston o rings and the pump condition, is the small hole down the centre of the spool valve clear ? not uncommon for the pump cam drive keyway to be missing after a rebuild. you can also fit a lager diameter, higher output pump kit available, if there's any unsure about the removal taking the gearbox and OD out complete is in the end the best approach. and do it all on the benchPete
