Overdrive colum mount

The overdrive switch mounts to a special plastic cowl which replaces the one in place over the indicator switch. Once you have all the wiring in place, all you need at the column is the switch, cowling and a set of decals,

Hi Dave, a couple of years ago I got the column mounted switch bought for me as a Christmas gift, and I got the cowl for it brand new from Rimmer Bros for around £12 which isn't that bad and it arrived beautifully wrapped. The price of a new switch is around the £30-£40 mark I think.

I have had a Quick look on the bay but I was not sure what I needed
Levers seem to be about £20-£30 and the cowl seems to be about £10
Now I know what that's all I need I'll keep looking and I think a quick word with
Lew and stu from the farm !

Ive got a column switch on my mk2 Spit and to change from o/drive 3rd to 'normal' 4th quickly is not easy! And similarly going back down is the same.

Is this why later models had the switch actually in the gear knob? Fitting one of these is on the todo list this winter.

It was cost reduction, the same arrangement to all other British Leyland cars with overdrive at the same time.
I prefer the column switch ergonomically (which is a personal preference) and for reliability and my general dislike of electric shocks and smoke.

Bill.

I thought that was teh reason 3rdOD and 4th were the same ratio, so you din't have to change between the 2.

Column is much better, you don't have to take your hands off the wheel. and the majority of people are right-handed, so in the Uk the gearstick switch is under your weaker and less co-ordinated hand.
