Davemate Posted December 20, 2012 Posted December 20, 2012 I want to put an overdrive colum switch onto my herald What parts do I need ?I now I need the lever switch, but how does it all mount onto the steering colum ?
heraldcoupe Posted December 20, 2012 Posted December 20, 2012 The overdrive switch mounts to a special plastic cowl which replaces the one in place over the indicator switch. Once you have all the wiring in place, all you need at the column is the switch, cowling and a set of decals,Cheers,Bill.
thescrapman Posted December 20, 2012 Posted December 20, 2012 You may also need slightly deep pockets if you buy new,Have a word with Lewis or Stuart up the farm, they may ba able to assist.Cheers
Stu 1986 Posted December 20, 2012 Posted December 20, 2012 Hi Dave, a couple of years ago I got the column mounted switch bought for me as a Christmas gift, and I got the cowl for it brand new from Rimmer Bros for around £12 which isn't that bad and it arrived beautifully wrapped. The price of a new switch is around the £30-£40 mark I think.S.
mikeyb Posted December 20, 2012 Posted December 20, 2012 ebay is your firend, plenty of both on there , same for vitesse, Tr etc :-)
Davemate Posted December 20, 2012 Author Posted December 20, 2012 I have had a Quick look on the bay but I was not sure what I needed Levers seem to be about £20-£30 and the cowl seems to be about £10Now I know what that's all I need I'll keep looking and I think a quick word with Lew and stu from the farm !
molsmagic Posted December 20, 2012 Posted December 20, 2012 Ive got a column switch on my mk2 Spit and to change from o/drive 3rd to 'normal' 4th quickly is not easy! And similarly going back down is the same.Is this why later models had the switch actually in the gear knob? Fitting one of these is on the todo list this winter.
mikeyb Posted December 20, 2012 Posted December 20, 2012 you want one of thesehttp://www.canleyclassics.com/searchforapart/?ptno=611974http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Steering-wheel-COWL-INDICATOR-OVERDRIVE-MODELS-GT6-SPITFIRE-VITESSE-TR5-TR6-/130821342906?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item1e758f46baand one of thesehttp://www.canleyclassics.com/searchforapart/?desc=OVERDRIVE%20SWITCH%20ON%20COLUMN%20RHDhttp://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/OVERDRIVE-STALK-SWITCH-RHD-TRIUMPH-SPITFIRE-MK1-2-3-VITESSE-GT6-1-2-147280-/230898292015?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item35c29c552fagree the gearknob switch is more effective
Nick Jones Posted December 20, 2012 Posted December 20, 2012 I used the column switch to switch the wipers on my Herald...... with a switch on the gearstick for the OD. Nick

It was cost reduction, the same arrangement to all other British Leyland cars with overdrive at the same time.I prefer the column switch ergonomically (which is a personal preference) and for reliability and my general dislike of electric shocks and smoke. Cheers,Bill.
Royboy66 Posted December 21, 2012 Posted December 21, 2012 I love my column switch so much I added a telltale light Dave ! 8)http://youtu.be/ot1SuR_9inw

Paudman Posted December 22, 2012 Posted December 22, 2012 You could fit one either side... then operate overdrive with whatever bodily part is free at the time.
