Modern copies suffer from very poor adhesion of the two metal parts to the rubber insert, so I drilled rioght through and placed two bolts to retain them and improve adhesion.I've just removed Mk1, and found that the holes were so low that the rubber had torn through. One side of the rubber insert had come loose. Mk2, therefore, has the bolts as far up the bracket as possible.See pic:
Richard B Posted December 11, 2011 Posted December 11, 2011 A certain member of the forum who previously owned Jessica's first Herald made a gearbox mount for a J'Type into her Herald using a Vitesse/GT6 engine mount.I was initially rather scathing of this 'bodge' :BHowever I have now come to use this on my own 6 cylinder small chassis. ??)It requires a small plate welded across the piece with the two holes to provide the correct spacing for the O/D and another sustantial plate bent into a U to bolt to the chassis and lower the mount to the correct height (you discard the OE gearbox plate.It's definitely more robust than a normal GT6 style mount and if you are using a PI its up to the job.Thanks Clive! ;)

Mk2, therefore, has the bolts as far up the bracket as possible.See pic:You could try using some metal tube through the rubber and slightly smaller dia bolts plus a small plate on the other face of the rubber to spread the load when bolts were tightened up then it would be a really good fix but we live and learn by our mistakes and success and of course mistakes are the portals of discovery. 8)
Van Posted December 15, 2011 Posted December 15, 2011 Good idea, I bought an original style one in 1995 and it is still OK despite being covered in oil. Have picked up a couple of used ones for spares since as they are much better made with the new stuff. Shame everything new I buy these days turns out to be poor quality. Might be worth talking to Chris Witor because he imports good quality mounts for the big saloons from Oz, maybe he can diversify here.Van
