Dee Jay
Hi all, I started my Vitesse MK 1 up this morning only to find a bad oil leak coming from the nut that holds the oil filter housing on, original type housing. Does anyone know if there should be a washer behind this nut and if so where I could get one? As the housing itself is over 50 years old it may be a case it needs replacing, if so does anyone have any idea where I might get one? Thanks in advance
RobPearce
They're generally pretty long lasting - substantial steel and well oiled to keep the rust at bay. There is a "seal" under the bolt head (it's not a nut!) but I don't know how easy it is to replace. Figure 3 on page 1-107 of the official WSM shows it. If you do decide your housing needs to be replaced, I have a spare in the loft (my Vitesse has a spin-on conversion).
Saltddirk
On the Roadster which are using similar there is a copper washer between the housing and head. It is not replaceable in situ, you need to take the whole filter off, which you would normally do when changing oil or filters. So you earned yourself an intermediate oil change. :) It is fiddly to put back also, trying to get the housing to line up with the seal and holding the whole assembly while trying to start the bolt most often while laying on your back with a drizzle of old oil running in your sleeve.... As Rob says, a spin- on conversion does away with the hassle, and has a much better filtration to booth Dirk
