I've had to adjust the front drivers side wheel bearing on my 2000 for the second time in 6000 miles, surely not normal?

I'm sort of assuming I'm going to have to renew the bearing, and probably brake discs at the same time as I think they're a bit warped.

Is a puller required to remove the remnants of the bearings from the stub axle or will I be able to get them off by some other means, if so, how...?

The bearings have been on for less than a year, and have seen some pretty serious action between adjustment.  Not noisy or rough so one to keep an eye on......

Perhaps just settling in?  I know this shouldn't happen but in practice it does seem to.

Awful system for adjusting - You aim for the mandatory "just perceptible play" but the nearest splitpin hole usually leaves the nut either too tight or too loose.  I sometimes cheat by inserting a fairly tight-fit splitpin and then forcing the nut a touch one way or the other to achieve the correct play.

Hello Sorbs,

I would have a good look at the stub axle for wear. Bearings should need little adjustment especially in such a short mileage. Also, if installed clean there should not really be any perceptible settling in.  Worth over tightening slightly on initial assembly to seat the inner races then adjust as required.

Thanks, I'll keep an eye on this issue.

I really need to get hold of a d.t.i. and measure the disc run out.  There is a worsening shudder under braking.  If I have to renew the discs, I'll do the bearings at the same time.

While I'm there, I suppose that the calipers could do with a quick check over.  It wouldn't hurt to replace the flexi hoses either.....

No need to be jealous Greeks, I'm sure that if you keep looking, and perhaps spend a bit more time on the internet, you'll find plenty of people out there with alarmingly tidy garages who will offer assistance in mending your old motor. ;D
