Lord Sorbington
I've had to adjust the front drivers side wheel bearing on my 2000 for the second time in 6000 miles, surely not normal?I'm sort of assuming I'm going to have to renew the bearing, and probably brake discs at the same time as I think they're a bit warped. Is a puller required to remove the remnants of the bearings from the stub axle or will I be able to get them off by some other means, if so, how...? AlanChatterton
No puller needed Sorbs. All you need is some big sockets to drift out the bearing shells from the hub, but you don't need a puller.I changed mine last summer............fairly simple job.Why don't you bring it across to me and we'll do it one Sunday............? Lord Sorbington
The bearings have been on for less than a year, and have seen some pretty serious action between adjustment. Not noisy or rough so one to keep an eye on.Sounds like a good job for a Sunday.....

I know this shouldn't happen but in practice it does seem to.Awful system for adjusting - You aim for the mandatory "just perceptible play" but the nearest splitpin hole usually leaves the nut either too tight or too loose. I sometimes cheat by inserting a fairly tight-fit splitpin and then forcing the nut a touch one way or the other to achieve the correct play. shenderson
Adjust new bearings just a little bit tight so they can bed in. The "just perceptible play" applies later, when readjusting bedded in bearings.Don't adjust bedded in bearings tight or you'll soon be renewing them again.Steve H
piman
Hello Sorbs, I would have a good look at the stub axle for wear. Bearings should need little adjustment especially in such a short mileage. Also, if installed clean there should not really be any perceptible settling in. Worth over tightening slightly on initial assembly to seat the inner races then adjust as required. Lord Sorbington
Thanks, I'll keep an eye on this issue.I really need to get hold of a d.t.i. and measure the disc run out. There is a worsening shudder under braking. If I have to renew the discs, I'll do the bearings at the same time. While I'm there, I suppose that the calipers could do with a quick check over. It wouldn't hurt to replace the flexi hoses either.....Greeks wrote:Jaysus, this place is turning out to be a bit of a hook-up forum ... can't you fellas do this kind of thing somewhere else :-DNo need to be jealous Greeks, I'm sure that if you keep looking, and perhaps spend a bit more time on the internet, you'll find plenty of people out there with alarmingly tidy garages who will offer assistance in mending your old motor. ;D
