PaulB
HiHas anyone managed to program this years RBRR route onto a Sat Nav, including waypoints so one can actually following the intended route rather than go the most direct route to each control stop?Cheers
mole42
Er - isn't that what the Road Book is for?And you've done it six times already, should be a piece of cake this time!!

PaulB
I'm in a Spitfire so 2 man crew. We always try and follow the actual route. I always mark the route on a road atlas as well. We use road book when we are both awake but when one is sleeping, the sat nav is useful. As it's a bit tricky/dangerous driving and reading a road book at the same time. RobPearce
I've done six of my ten RBRRs in two-seaters and only once used a satnav... and that was the time we missed a control! Use the road book.
Tim Bancroft
Paul,Agree, Sat Nav is a good safety tool for when the co-driver is sleeping. We have not produced a sat nav route. As you know, Friday night is A1, A68, A9 and A99.Saturday night is more difficult after Gledrid. I would just write down the prominent towns that we pass through and use that: Welshpool, Bulith Wells, then its Sugar Loaf. Then Llandovery, Monmouth, Chepstow, Severn Bridge, M5, Then off into darkest Somerset for Westonzoyland then back onto M5 to Exeter, A30 to Okehampton stop etc etcI always think marking a road atlas is a good idea, gets it into the head. mpbarrett
You can use a PC program called TYRE to generate a series of waypoints for an older TomTom (new ones dont do waypoints) or a Garmin. All you need is a couple of hours on the PC working thru the Road book to generate the files that can be down loaded to the Satnav. Its also a good way of seeing where the route is going as it uses Google earth and you can switch between roads and sat images.Yes the Sat Nav can be very useful when you are tired and your co driver is kipping...Mike
Howard
Anyone using a recent Garmin can download their free software which allows you to set the start and finish points eg London to JOG and then drag the route to exactly match the roadbook. (Just don't enter Knebworth to Knebworth as it doesn't create a route !)There are three programs which all do different things:-1) Garmin Express which downloads software and map updates and allows your computer to connect to the unit. 2) Garmin Basecamp which allows you to create very very detailed routes. Combined with Google Earth & Bing Maps it allows you to travel every road before you set off. 3) Garmin POI loader. Even if you don't load the route maps it is a good idea to load the control points, so if you have a problem enroute you can get the shortest/quickest route to the next one.The other thing worth considering is downloading the latest camera warning software. There is a free trial available which will suffice for the RBRR.CheersHoward
Saltddirk
hiyaI know it is frowned upon but Team Broom will also be using Satnav for the long stretches when all are asleep. Beside the driver that is.Last time round we had a list of coordinates of the controls, any chance this year anyone did the same? Specially the more obscure ones... Sugar loaf, Westy-whatevert- airfield, badgers holt....I will only be getting the roadbook on friday so advance plotting and programming is essential for us.CheerzD
