yorkshire_spam
We had to book the dog sitter as soon as we found out our entry was confirmed!
HNJ1N
Fine thanks Mike, luck was on my side,-managed to exit the autobahn and into a police station car park.My fire extinguisher didnt work but the attentive police used one they had to hand. Fire was localised to alternator and engine bay wiring, the car should live again, cheers, Laurence

yorkshire_spam
Looking at fitting the trunionless uprights last night... not happy with the top ball joints, so ordered those as well. Might as well do them at the same time!

HNJ1N
A few photos attached to illustrate the failure due to alternator fire, hopefully the car will be on its way back from Germany in the next week or so, cheers, Laurence
Velocita Rosso
Laurence, you going to uprate the alternator whilst you are at it?
HNJ1N
Lets see what the diagnosis reveals Mike, i suspect it is a wiring issue, maybe a short circuit at the alternator, the small fire was in the alternator and revealed itself via plastic cowl as per the pic
Beans
Looking at the damage it should be possible to get it back on the road without to much problems.Where in Germany is the car?
HNJ1N
Near Magdeburg Theo, about 50kms west, just off the E30. It did occur to me have the car fixed in Germany but lack of local knowledge is a problem, cheers, Laurence
Beans
That indeed is a bit to far away. If closer it should have been possible to fix the car somewhere in this area (Roermond -Venlo in the NL)
HNJ1N
I am still waiting to hear what the recovery arrangements will be.., all being well they will deliver it back in 1 piece to Torquay, but a plan b to have the car sorted in Holland might be an option, cheers, Laurence

don cook1
My alternator fried my battery on a motorway in Belgium...back in 2002. I was collected and taken to a garage at about 6pm and they had a new battery and alternator fitted by 9am the next morning. Footman James paid for everything other than the parts and labour, even an extra night in a hotel and extra for the ferry. No idea where it happened but we found a bar that night that sold home-brew wheat beer. What a night!

Tim Bancroft
Laurence,Great to hear.Still not seen the Saloon being used in anger.I have a number of jobs to do before the 10CR: Brakes, steering column, gearbox re-build, doors-crikey! HNJ1N
Matt, The 5 limped back home from Pompey on the sunday and will be going in for an assessment tomorrow, i suspect burnt exhaust valve but i'm not complaining after eight years and 45k miles of hard use,-the 5 will be back!. Tim, An engine bay rewire and a few electrical upgrades should do the trick with the Mk1. Your car runs well and felt more than capable of doing 10'CR as is!, still plenty of time to deal with details ;), cheers, L
