IIRC the later type back boxes are the ones with the simple sleeve joint to attach to the front pipe, they were certainly an improvement on the flange joint type. These can be fitted to an flange joint type front pipe by cutting off the flange joint, which is fitted further back along the system than the sleeve joint - I suspect the sleeve joint back boxes were first made to get around the problem of the bolts on the flange joints being rusted up solid.

Having said all that, I would be surprised to see an early type exhaust on an Acclaim now, if you see one it's probably not done many miles at all and I would check to see how old and hard the tyres are..! For the sake of clarity the early front pipes have a solid mounting at the manifold end, this works well until some monkey at a fast fit place chucks the support bracket meaning the joint is constantly strained and doesn't last long at all. The later type has a sprung balljoint just below the manifold flange to avoid strain at this point and doesn't need the support bracket to be fitted, indeed there's no room to fit it anyway.
