petterelmon FC 74506
Hi Does anyone know of a cylinder head for spitfire 1147 that has part number 211289? I'm preparing a spitfire for historic racing and this part is mentioned in the FIA homologation form 165 as optional equipment to the Le Mans-style aluminum 8-port head. I'm very interested in finding out if that head is a cast iron 8 or 6-port head.See photo. Is it possible to see in that photo if it's an 8-port or 6-port? rustbuckit2011
I cant give you a definitive answer, but the combustion chamber is the same shape as an 8 port. They did cast some in steel too, so my money is on 8 port.
Dannyb
I had an 8 port fitted to my 1965 mk1 back in 1970 that was steel.

RRR
From what I can see/understand the picture shows the works 8 port head as used on the Le Mans cars. These were produced in cast in both iron, and aluminium, and from what I understand in 64 the Le Mans cars used the cast iron head. The aluminium heads were first used on the rally cars, and then having proved their reliability were used in 1965 on the Le Mans cars as well.To confuse the issue Triumph also offered a slightly different 'productionised' 8 port to the public, principally through SAH.The main identifiers being the stud positions on the exhaust/inlet side, and the combustion shape. The SAH heads retaining the 6 port style chamber.I must confess that much of this is third hand information from a bit of an anorak, I've only managed to examine a few photographs.Much depends on the regulations you are preparing to, as the 1147 engine can perform very well indeed. This link might be interesting .http://www.jagclub.ru/1147.html
