Sideways Tim
Is there any merit in re-torquing the head bolts a few miles after a re-build?
TR7th Heaven
I've done 200 miles since rebuilding my Vitesse engine and I'm contemplating the same thing Tim. I posted the question on here assuming that I'd re-tighten them after 500 miles when I'd change the oil, do the tappets etc but someone suggested that they should be done at 250 miles and then again at 500 miles! Overkill? I'm not sure.Rich ;)
Sideways Tim
I was wondering as I was going to do it when re-setting the tappets. The fact that you have to remove the rocker assy to get to the head bolts kind of makes it pointless to do both operations at the same time. What's the general consensus? James
Most of the debris that is generated by your engine bedding in is within the first hundred miles— so I guess there is something to be said for doing it early.
TR7th Heaven
My Vitesse engine still feels really 'tight' after 200 miles. A consequence of this is that it runs rather hot. It has freed up a bit and will now rev out a little better but it's taking its sweet time to really loosen up. Sticking to 45-50mph and under 2500 rpm is frustrating!Rich ;)

I forgot to retorque one time and blew the head gasket in the middle of Scotland, just a bit inconveniant as I live in Northern Ireland.
Sideways Tim
Bugger. Just spent a few minutes re-torquing the bolts and number 2 bolt (as per Haynes manual) has the feeling of a bolt just about to give up. All the others are happily at 45 lb/ft.Is it worth just replacing the one stud (that's assuming it comes out clean) or is it a head off and do the lot job? rotoflex
You are talking about the type of an ethical judgment that all of us who've faced at one time are too ashamed to discuss what we did.
Sideways Tim
For what it's worth I took the nut off and was pleased to see that's all the problem was. Put a new one on and up to 46 lb/ft no problem.Stay tuned for leaky head gasket news...
Deleted User
I always re-torque the head when I rebuild an engine.
RobMoore606
I just re-torqued mine on Sunday then reset the tappets, about 400 miles ish since I had the head off, I noticed a difference and all nuts turned a little before the click came from the wrench.
