heralddolly
Hi.Reading back through various mags etc, I noted that quite a few Vitesse owners have tried to go down the SU carb route as a change from the standard Stroms. Was this considered a reasonable mod or was it a case of just being different or owners didn't like setting up the Stroms ??Thanks. Richard.
Nick Jones
Mine had HIF4s for a while as the Stroms I had were knackered. Was fairly easy to swap - just had to file out the mounting holes a bit on one of the carbs and cobble a linkage together. It made hot starting very much easier and the economy improved considerably. It also ran better at lower speed, but I never felt it went quite as well at high speed as it did on the the Stroms. The improvements were probably due to the poor condition of the Stroms rather than anything else. The Strombergs, especially the early ones before they got messed up with emissions gubbins are good carbs. Back when I swapped over, Stromberg parts were near impossible. Things are better now.Nick
Mark Hammond
You may need the Dolomite Sprint shorter dashpots on your SUs if you do this for clearance purposes.Mark

Deleted User
I think it depends on condition of your Strombergs and what you want to achieve. The Strombergs on my Mk2 have been rebuilt properly and they perform really well. As part of a well sorted package I get smooth tick-over, easy acceleration and 32mpg general running and 35+ mpg on longer open road runs.I don't see the point of converting...personal view.-prc. HIF44s or HS6s on a 2500S manifold will have clearance issues. Sprint dashpots help.Nick
ferny
I changed the Herald from Stromberg to SU for the same reason as Nick. I did notice an increase in torque but as said, I wasn't comparing good with good.Another reason I changed is because the tuning knowledge for SU's is far easier to obtain than for Strombergs. If I tweaked the engine and asked for needle advice no-one knew the answers for Strombergs.
Pete Lewis
agree the options are less with strombergs but take one of each make down to its component parts , lay them on a nice clean card and look at the vast difference in the standard on design and engineering and to SU is a bag of bits in comparison.if looked after both do a good job Pete
