tlrtone
Hi all, quick question if I may.As I understand it there are three different repair panels for the rear wings of the herald (convertible in my case)1. A full wing - from the swage line down2. A repair plate that is the 1/4 panel in front of the rear wheel 3. A repair plate for the wheel arch.Question: Does the wheel arch repair plate come forward and include the 1/4 panel (item 2) or will I need both 2 & 3? Sorry to be a numpty, its my first Herald restoration! (I have another to do after tis so hopefully I will know by then!)thanks.Great boards btw, you all seem friendly enough! ;D
Richard B
2 & 3 both can be required, although there is some overlap.Part 2 Does NOT! repat NOT! extend up to the fold in the metal. It stops about 1/4'' below the fold. Do not be a plonker like me :( and cut off too much! You need to do part 2 to do a proper repair on the inner rear wing. ps this also affects the wings bending out doors not fitting saga..... See other threads. Check the doors before welding :)
bxbodger
This is about how much you need to cut off and also what you may find behind there....so be prepared for a bit of extra fabrication and welding. It's a surprisingly difficult panel to fit correctly as you want the door shut part of it to line up correctly (try to keep that bit of the original wing if it's not rotted away), and if you need to do any repairs behind as I did ( and someone had been there before in it's last resto 20 odd yrs ago.....) you need to make sure the inner part you make up allows the repair panel to sit the right distance out and the sill to line up as well.......... ::)You also need to decide wether to use the full lower wing panel, or use the short lower wing extension bit on the arch edge repair panel. I went for the former option and cut the bottom off the arch panel-as below,This was because the arch edge repair panel wouldn't line up properly with the wing repair panel, but I'd also had to replace the outer half of the wheelarch as well..which was a whole other story of ill-fitting repair paneldom.... ::) ::)Have fun!!! ;D
tlrtone
bxbodger, thanks for the great pictures, I am sure that mine is as bad underneath, so I am prepared for the worst!Having restored many VW beetles I know how something may look nice on the outside and is a dog underneath. Hey, ho, it's off to weld I go......
