Combover
What weight saving would I get if I swapped the steel panels on the TR5 for GRP replacements? Not going to do it, just interested to know.Cheers.
GT6Steve
It's kind of an open ended question but I can say that I cut the weight of my GT6 bonnet in half with GRP. Went from 80 Lbs to 40 Lbs. Or about 165Kg to 82 Kg.And my bonnet was road spec. Race spec stuff is even lighter.
JohnD
Depends entirely on how the panels are made.Ordinary weight about 2/3rds that of steel, race weight (about 1/2) or hitech composite weight(a third). The Sb had doors that weighed 5kgs WITH the handles and locks (no glass), and the roof was 9kgs when the steel roof was 30kgs. All down to composite construction. But a whole car made in GRP may save no weight at all. A famous hill-climbing Spitfire, that looks original but has an entirely GRP body, is heavier than a steel one!John
