James Posted June 9, 2010 Posted June 9, 2010 I still have this fuel issue to sort - I see no point in putting the engine in danger when it's not running properly :(
TimW Posted June 9, 2010 Posted June 9, 2010 jcarruthers wrote:I still have this fuel issue to sort - I see no point in putting the engine in danger when it's not running properly :(I agree.I also found that the su's were ok with the pressure of the elec pump for a while but soon started to push fuel past the main jet while the pump was running. Not something you may notice if you were not looking for it as you would expect the fuel to come out of the overflow rather than the main jet. Worth checking without the pistons or dash pots on.
TimW Posted June 9, 2010 Posted June 9, 2010 jcarruthers wrote:Good idea - not a drop has come out of the overflow. What needles are in the carbs?
James Posted June 10, 2010 Posted June 10, 2010 BBT is what is in the carbs at the moment - I have the other two needles in my "stock"You are spot on about the pump - fuel is coming out the top of the jets... not good... should have ordered a regulator - but I have a Filter King ready and waiting to go on the Spitfire so I can use that (just would have been easier to avoid the filter bit and just shove it in-line)
Tim Bancroft Posted June 10, 2010 Posted June 10, 2010 James,I reckon you should have bought a Huco! Its been a fantastic addition to the car, very pleased-no sign of fuel starvation.
James Posted June 10, 2010 Posted June 10, 2010 Me too! Though the total price in the end will be the same.

Sign-on will be open from 07:45 and the driver briefing begins at 08:30. Please arrive in good time, as we have 48 drivers to sign on. You will also need to have a static noise test, which is operating from 08:00.PRINT OUT THE INDEMNITY AND BRING IT FULLY COMPLETEDYou can help speed up sign-on considerably and reduce queuing time if you print out the MGoT indemnity form attached, and bring it with you fully completed. Please ask your 2nd drivers and passengers to do the same.DON'T FORGET YOUR ROAD LICENCEPlease don't forget your full licence - both the plastic and paper parts if you have the newer type for all drivers. All cars must be road legal and conform to current MOT standards unless you have agreed otherwise with the MGoT committee in advance.SESSIONSThe session list is also attached. We are running four sessions; three for MG and the other for Club Triumph. PLEASE CHECK YOUR SESSION ALLOCATION. The Red group is predominantly the less experienced drivers and/or slower cars. The Blue group is the more experienced drivers and/or faster cars, with the Yellow group the experienced group. More weighting is given to experience than the car's power! It is possible that we have the wrong driver experience level for you if you haven't updated your user profile recently. At this stage it is difficult to swap groups around if there are errors, but if you have a real problem in your session allocation, then please let me know and I'll see what we can do. The session running order on the day will be Red, Blue, Green (Club Triumph), Yellow.PLEASE CHECK YOUR PRE-BOOKED INSTRUCTION OR HELMET HIREThe Session List also shows the pre-bookings for instruction and helmet hire. My setup is similar to yours and when i went on the rolling road the guy put BAA in which was a little rich in the midrange for road use (great for track use) so settled for BAB'sI have a filter king regulator and kept adjusting it with the pump on untill the fuel stopped flowing out of the jets.
James Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 Tim - could you tell me your engine spec when you had those installed?I won't be able to get those needles in time now :(
TimW Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 jcarruthers wrote:Tim - could you tell me your engine spec when you had those installed?I won't be able to get those needles in time now :(James2.5 pi (mk2 saloon) balanced bottom end, .20thou overbored, flat top pistons, recess removed from block and matched piston heights, 10.1 compression, standard pi head, TR5 camshaft, 6-3-1 extractor manifold with single exit exhaust, lightened GT6 flywheel, HS6 SU's, electric "cube" fuel pump with filter king regulator. 131bhp and 149ftlbs torque. I had the rolling road done about 2 weeks ago with about 500 miles on the fresh engine.
James Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 Thanks Tim.. mine is a 2 litre... 40 thou pistons... 11:1... ported head... wilder cam...But - I think it still suggests that I do need richer needles!
Nick Jones Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 James,The dashpot springs have an effect too. Can't remember which way round it works (lighter spring = richer mixture I think) do you know which you have? Salisbury (Burlen) is almost on the way to CC :PNick
James Posted June 12, 2010 Posted June 12, 2010 Nick - am not sure! I guess I could just buy uprated ones but I don't think they would be causing that much of an issue. At least it's not my main problem.Today I fitted a fuel pressure regulator, still didn't make any difference but solved the issue of fuel pissing out of the jets.I was over at Picton's and we were scratching our heads as to what it might be - he suggested checking the float needle valves for size. Turns out I had one proper one and one that was too small. So we swapped them for a pair of fresh Jag ones. Still didn't seem to make much difference until I tried pulling the choke. This must have dislodged something as it then rev'ed very sweetly indeed! Before it was struggling to keep up - but now the fuel supply can keep up with the engine. It's not quite a kick in the back yet - but it gets very fast very quickly now :)So I'll clean out the jets tomorrow to make sure no more crud can come through and see how it goes.James
