2Toledos Posted June 16, 2010 Posted June 16, 2010 Sounds like a good time was had by one and ..... most ! I had a good day on Saturday at CC; so, can't complain. Though, still wish I could have done both.thescrapman wrote:... his TR6 red lines at 3000rpm apparently.... :-)ColinA cautionary note:That ploy might get you out onto the track; but, you have to be a bit careful at CC... They're a bit 'anal' about the noise levels (moaning local residents trying to get the circuit closed !); and, they frequently do 'drive by' checks, and you will be 'black flagged' if the car's considered too loud.

GT6boy Posted June 16, 2010 Posted June 16, 2010 thescrapman wrote:Is a standard Witor exhaust 103db??Mmmmm...I expect yours will be quieter when it is setup properly. What rpm did you tell them was 2/3rds max??That may have been your issue, you need to talk to Mr Helm next time, his TR6 red lines at 3000rpm apparently.... :-)Colin Nothing to do with Jame's set up :). Whilst the MGoT paperwork stated the limit is 100dB at 2/3 max rpm, the circuit on the day said it was 100dB at 4500rpm. Irrespective of engine type, that was the limit they were running to, that day. As they said on querying, the circuit has the final say. I came in at 95.9(might even have been 94.9!), I think that was strangely low, but my cheapo electronic tacho underreads ;)! A lot of cars were, not surprisingly, high. Best Quality Tim set a new benchmark at something like 105/6!! The more experianced in our number tutored us pups in the correct gradual increase in rpm method in achieving the 4.5k, then really gently run back down- no popping on the overrun! 8) They did let some borderline guys through- but one of the sound guys certainly carried out the role of 'miserable ol' basta#d' with some degree of delight :X.
thescrapman Posted June 16, 2010 Posted June 16, 2010 Cars that are correctly setup and tuned tend to have a quieter exhaust, more of the fuel is being used more effectively. It will make a very distinctive sound. If it is running rich or weak it will sound wrong, and usually be louder. In this example Lots of people have the same Witor exhausts, some are much louder.CheersColin
James Posted June 16, 2010 Posted June 16, 2010 To be fair to the scrutineer who did my noise tests he was very patient and after my 4th or 5th attempt at passing was really happy to give me the sticker. He thanked me for being so polite and patent as he said he gets so many "arrogant cocks" doing his job. He'd been doing it 20 years and was able to judge 4500rpm by ear - as confirmed by my hastily installed rev counter after the third test
GT6boy Posted June 16, 2010 Posted June 16, 2010 It pays to be polite James! :) You were clearly doing all you could and they are(largely) enthusiasts too. They tested and passed me by ear there before.

smithy Posted June 17, 2010 Posted June 17, 2010 2Toledos wrote:'Classic & Retro Car Action Day'; so, all sorts in attendance.Aye, including me - at a tenner each to get in, which made me smart a bit. Lotuses yes, and a lot of Fords and a lot of Porsche Speedster reps. Wasn't a bad day out. Monday was much better though. And cheaper. ;)

Chriss Posted June 18, 2010 Author Posted June 18, 2010 I have had this from Martin at MGoTChris several drivers both MG and Triumph experienced some trouble in passing the noise test on Monday, in particular though 2 or 3 Triumphs. One of your guys came and asked me what the rule for the test at Combe was, as the marshall was asking all cars to rev 4500rpm. He wondered whether it should be 3/4 of maximum revs and although several circuits do operate that rule we did say it would have to be what the Marshall was telling people to test at as they make the rules.I have now had chance to check the terms and conditions and can confirm that the test was correct," Vehicles will be tested to RAC MSA sound limits at 100db(A) at 45deg from exhaust outlet at 0.5 meters and 4500rpm (static test)"So if any of members do comment on this please can confirm the above to them. All your drivers seemed to have a good day, even the guy whose seat broke and caused him a moment and several hoped they could come again next year.Best regards,Martin Charles, for MGoTIn my experience Coombe, as other circuits seem to make it up as they go along, but Coombe and Goodwood's measuring equipment does seem to be a few Db more sensitive than some other circuits. As a rule to be certain of getting through you need to be about 5 Db below the circuit limit.
Lord Sorbington Posted June 18, 2010 Posted June 18, 2010 Ha!, It's not my imagination or sensitive ears, those Witor exhausts are farcking noisy!
99176 Posted June 18, 2010 Posted June 18, 2010 It is a fact that four years ago my car failed the noise test at Combe. I went to Merlins and bought an 'add on' muffler which allowed me to drive. I have been back half a dozen times since, with exactly the same spec car and have passed every time without the use of the add on.It is frustrating but at least my investment of four years ago enabled Tim to get a drive on Monday. Something would appear to be awry, as cars usually get noisier as silencers deteriorate over time.
