Team 37 ('78 2500S Estate Auto) retired in the early hours of Friday morning in Austria due to smoke pouring out of front right wheel. Suspected servo failure causing brakes to bind when engine running. Fortunately we were travelling in convoy and Dale who was directly behind us being radioed through that he could smell burning brakes, we pulled over at the next service station to be greeted with clouds of smoke. We could not see the smoke as it was pitch black when we were running (or smell because the windows were shut and the outside ventilation in the off position). 9 hours later we were on our way in a hire car to Cortina - the car should be back in blightly in 3 weeks.

Our car never really ran correctly due to missing under load - we changed most of the ignition system to no avail and then found a loose spade connector on the fuel pump relay which gave us 90% power rather than less than 50%. However we still had an undiagnosed ignition fault which came back at Timmelshoch - we managed the summit on three cylinders which was a bit hairy.

The rest of the trip was equally annoying from a misfire point of view but we still hadn't cured it by the time Doug hit the ferry despite rewiring the coil ( +we tried 4 different coils) , three dizzy caps, points dizzy and pirhana dizzy, new plugs and new leads. Tres puzzlement!!

Apart from not being able to get past 105mph downhill and about 70mph uphill it was a great trip and we completed all the passes + a few more with no other faults.

We got within 200 miles of Rolduc on Sunday early evening before finally admitting defeat with an intermittent problem of losing power dramatically. After one particularly hairy moment stopped on the crawler lane of a French motorway we decided it was safer for everyone if we stuck to the non motorway roads but even that killed us eventually.

Didier has repaired my and it's Stag is ready for collection. Going over tomorrow, looks like a long day but it should be worth it in the end.

Mike (Charlton), it might be an idea to contact Didier, have your Spitfire recovered to his garage north of Brussels and send the parts over. Just a thought

After receiving phone calls from  PDJ and DAS who said they were needing `specialist equipment` to move my car ( a four castor wheeled dolly?)....as at yesterday.....I then received an email from the recovery garage in Austria ,to say it left them on Sunday 20th !
Highly confused, insurers saying one thing and our Austrian friends saying something else
Just got this feeling its going to turn up on Monday, shouting "surprise surprise"..........
