10CR '13 Who's got what left to do ?

Either Carmel or I have been using the TR6 daily in the last 2-3 weeks to try and iron out any potential niggles. It only managed 300miles between MoTs last year (May 2012 - May 2013)  :( . We've done more than that in the last 2 weeks now.

Unfortunately the slight weep from the gearbox is getting worse and I don't fancy topping the car up at the end of every day on the 10CR or risk running the car too low. Looks like it's the rear oil seal, so part is ordered and I will attempt to replace it at the weekend.

Also changed the fan-belt this week as the old one was looking at bit hard and chirping on start-up. I'd forgotton what a pain that job is on the TR, having to loop it over the massive fan, then squeeze it between the front pulley, steering rack and that front cross-brace.

Ok, real seal arrived, ripped all the transmission tunnel out this evenin', cleaned off all the oil and went for a hot breezy drive ..... turns out it's not the rear seal after all, but the speedo drive. Fabricated a washer from some nitrile rubber and it seems to have fixed it.

Will test again tomorrow, but driving without the tunnel in is mildly scary.  Hands near the handbrake far too near the propshaft.   ??)

Yes Russell, you certainly need to take care when driving without the transmission tunnel in place. I've done this a few times when having done work just to check all OK before refitting everything then having the balls ache of having to dismantle all over again on finding the  original problem not solved!

It always amazes me how noisy the car is when running without the tunnel and just how effective it and the gear lever grommets are at absorbing the racket.

See you in Coquelles,

Tim

Drove the car for the first time just for the fun of it in almost a year, and it was the first drive since I fitted the new gearbox.
Was good fun but I was reminded of the fact that the shock absorbers might need to be set slightly firmer.
Otherwise no issues so far and no items added to the To-Do-List yet :)

TR tunnel and dash all back together as the bad gearbox leak seems fixed.

Eurotunnel booked for Wednesday to Wednesday as we're tagging on a couple of days extra for an Amsterdam visit.

Campanile Calais booked for Wednesday night, Holiday Inn Singen for the Saturday.

Swiss Vignette sitting on my desk.

Think that's all the logistics sorted, now ... onto the Spares List!

Hi Russell,

I've also got a leaking speedo drive on my car. What thickness of nitrile did you use? Also, what kind of gear oil do you favour? I've just started using semi-synthetic 75/90, and thinking that must be a bit more likely to leak than plain old mineral 80/90.

Cheers,
Matt

Hi Matt,

I think it's 3mm, was just from a sheet I've had hanging about for ages. (sorry haven't got it to hand at the moment). Looking at the diagram here :

http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-GRID600102

I put it between the gearbox and the back of the male threaded part (item 39). However, now you've prompted me to look at this, I reckon what I actually needed was the oil seal 38. :-/ I'm now toying with the idea of doing it with the proper part. Not sure I can do it from underneath as the exhaust is in the way.

I'm using GL4 80/90.

Russell.

Thanks, that's helpful. I'll drain the gearbox oil and see if I can seal my pinion up better too then.

It's no good, after seeing that diagram it nagged me I hadn't done it properly. So console out (again), tunnel loosened (I don't need to lift it right out), speedo pinion and housing out.

Seal looks a bit hard, so I'm ordering another.

Russell.

Changed the front ARB today, this was the last bit which still bore the scars from the 2011 10CR.
Was a bit of an ordeal especially with the pretty high temperatures (over 30ºC) and a heavy thunderstorm to liven things up  :X

Oh dear this is not going well... :(

Started preping the GT6 at the beginning of  June.

Gearbox was getting nosiy in 2nd and third gear ( this gearbox had been rebuilt only 2 years ago...)
Gearbox out and fit nearly rebuilt gearbox (from a different supplier) and change UJ on drive shafts
Realise rear bearing need replacing (lots of play in them), order new drive shaft from one of the better suppliers..
New drive shafts arrive, build them up with brakes bit (new shoes etc). Ready to fit and realise one of the new drive shaft flanges is running at least 5mm out of true,...
Talk to supplier and get it changed. As usual no apology... but this is triumph world where there is no customer service....
Finally get drive shaft fitted, gearbox in and take for a drive. Horrid noise from gearbox,
Supplier says oh yes problem with idler gear.
Take new gearbox out.
Take to supplier he strips it down while I am there and is not sure of the problem. Leave it with to fix. He has it for 2 days and 'fixes it', pick it up.
Go on holiday for a week and have a lovely time. Come back on Sat and today fit 'fixed gearbox' ... still very noisy sounds like a bag of nails.
Then petrol pipe (< 1 year old) starts to leak. Feel like giving the cars up completely...

So next weekend gearbox has to come out again and I will fit old slightly noisy gearbox and try to get a refund on the ' rebult upgraded box.

At least the Herald is behaving and am thinking we might take that on the 10CR. If we do there is no point having the GT6 and I might as well sell it or break it for parts on Ebay.

Overall I am completely fed up with crap parts and service from all the Triumph suppliers.

I am lucky enough to be in a position to be able to spend lots of money on my cars but it is just wasted with poor quality parts and very poor customer service.
Maybe it better with the large chassis cars (TR's etc..) but the small chassis 'cheap' cars service and parts are rubbish.

feeling very very grumpy

Mike

Drove my Vitesse today for the first time since the RBRR shaft failure.

Works done:

Rebuild gearbox including new clutch arm and pins
Rebuild diff with HD carrier(3.27)
fit electronic speedo and tacho
make LED panel to replace oil, ignition and high beam lamps
Convert rear to MK2 suspension and then fit Nick Jones CV  kit.
Fit new Avo shocks and 480lb springs at front.
Replacement for failed high torque starter fitted.

Still needs two tyres on the rear and an alignment for the new setup.

Plan is MOT on Saturday and then take it to the Plough on Monday.

Steve

Tell me more about the 3.27 HD carrier... My 3.27 was rebuilt by Mike Papworth in readiness for last years RBRR using a NOS 3.27 carrier.  Diff went bang last weekend....... :B

Cheers
