Play in Differential

Hi everyone

As part of the rear suspension overhaul i'm currently undertaking, I dropped the diff out of the car (65 Vitesse) during the weekend. Its an HB prefixed diff and hasn't shown any problems to date.

When I was having a look at it I noticed I could hold the input flange at the front of the diff and twist a small amount of play in each halfshaft flange. It wasn't much, maybe up to 5mm? I was wondering if this is normal and what other way's there are to test for wear/play in the diff?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers
Mark

That is probably within the normal range of play.
There is clearance between teeth of crown-wheel and pinion teeth ("backlash"), the differential teeth (sun-wheel and planetary gears) and the output shaft splines. which could well account for the amount of rotation you have found.

This is just for diffs in general, someone may have actual information on your particular diff
