O/D J type slipping....

Irritating. Never leave a Spitfire standing!
Last summer I fitted a used Jtype O/D and a recon box to my 1500. The car hasn't been used for 5 months, and getting it going this weekend I discover that the O/D won't stay engaged. Switching it in the revs flutter up and down making the car 'judder' with about a 30/min frequency. I topped up the gearbox oil with the correct spec and its made no difference. I had the filters out for cleaning in the summer and the O/D has only done about 400 miles since.

It was working fine in October, what could have happened?

Thanks Iain,
Just tried that. Can hear the windscreen wipers going, but no clicking from the O/D. It doesn't feel like an electrical problem either, it just feels like the O/D is slipping.
Probably looking at a reconditioned unit.....

The moral of the story. Don't buy 'well running' O/D box conversions...
1. Was told I would have to get a speedo cable as the original had broken, actually it was the angle drive that was broken, meaning I had to get both!
2. Propshaft couldn't be balanced as the rubber UJ was worn, had to have it replaced with a sliding joint.
3. Box in the car had a very noisy layshaft and crunching 3rd gear synchro. replaced it with a reconditioned box.
4. Now the O/D has stopped functioning.
I wouldn't mind, but I've had the gearbox out twice already and its a job I really hate......

Agree that it could be dirt in solenoid.

Also .... I had a similar problem before.   I did 3 things, and one of them fixed the problem.

1.  Changed the rubber O-rings on the solenoid valve.  Rimmers replacement O-Rings are noticeably thicker than the ones which came with the re-conditioned solenoid.

2.  Replaced one of the roll pins which hold the body of the solenoid ont the valve section.  Previous pin had dropped out.  Before replacing the pin the body noticeably moved when engaging Overdrive, afterwards it didn't.

3.  Drained all the oil - including removing the sump from the OD unit - and refilled.

Its been faultless since.

PS .... talking of think spanners .... has anyone found a source of thin enough 1 inch spanners for this job?

Yes mate I had an old spanner and used a grinder to thin it out! It worked fine for me and I still have the spanner even though I got rid of the OD! Do you want me to bring it up to Stirling this RBRR?
