Sandgroper
Hi, I am a GT6 owner looking for some advice to relay to my son in Adelaide. He tells me that Stags are a pretty reasonable price out there, compared to transporting the GT6 and paying the importation tax! Are there any massive 'no,no's' to Stag cars. Where are the rot spots etc?
RobPearce
As I found when I owned a Stag, they rot in all the usual places! Mine had one end of the rear subframe part company with the body through rust. The hood is amazingly complicated and expensive to fix if it's not quite right. Don't make the mistake I did of buying without having operated the hood on the test drive. The original engine doesn't like being mistreated, but isn't nearly as troublesome as the popular wisdom would say. If properly serviced it's a good engine. Martins Stag
I went from a 2.5 Spitfire to a Stag and Robs point are valid but if you have picked up some mechanical skills over the years a Stag should not be beyond you. The main difference you will find is that it is a Grand Tourer not a sports car. If the engine has been changed our for a Rover V8 or a Triumph straight 6 I wouldn't discount it either. Mine still had the Triumph V8 in it and over the 5 years I have had it has been fine but from what I have read when they go wrong it can be costly and complex. The other point to consider is that engine and to some degree some of the gearbox spares are becoming costly and some of the remanufactured parts quality can be suspect. I would suggest you go and drive one and the V8 noise did it for me.. You are only young once! Martin
V Mad
If paying for a 'good' car that has been resprayed do not assume bodywork under the paint has been properly restored. Get photgraphic evidence or recipts from a reputable specialist. Same with engine, if possible get receipts from respected specialists.
