jamiepeers
As stated guys, i have a type d over drive unit that was somewhat fitted by my uncle before i got the Spit, with a couple of wires hanging from it (green in colour) and also a switch to fit on top of the gearstick, again there are a few wires here that need connecting. Can anyone tell me what goes where, a simple wiring bullet pointer would be nice. Also i need to make sure i have reverse lights, at present i don't, and i think i'll start with the reverse light switch/wires on the 'box. Can you point me to where they are??Cars a 72 MK4Cheers
lancepar
I borrowed this image from another forum and it is for a single rail later model US (may be some extra wiring) spitty. It may be some help.Unlike you I don't need my reversing lamps, but may get them working one day so don't even know where the switches are located on a 3 rail box, can't even be arsed to drive her up the ramps and have a fiddle ;) 8)
2009poolesparky
regarding that piclight green looks like reverse light switchdark green looks like overdrive relaythe cables in the black sleeving going up to the gearstick could be the overdrive switchand the yellow going off to the bottom/rear of the gearbox is probably for the overdrive actuator/solenoidAlex

Falkon
Look at post #16 ... Picture of a trans w/ overdrive and reverse switches. Might be a seatbelt sw too. Not sure if UK cars had them.http://www.triumphexperience.com/phorum/read.php?8,725068,725068#msg-725068

jamiepeers
Sorry for the lack of thanks or replies on here guys, i have been asconded by the wife for some serious DIY around the house to pay for my over enthusiasm with cars, my penalty is laying decking and general manual labour in the garden which i hate!!!!As soon as i have that out of the way i am back on with the Spit. Many thanks for the replies. I shall keep you posted
jamiepeers
Again as per my other thread, the spitty took a back seat, then i found the clutch had welded itself to the flywheel due to it sat there, also the OSR brake cylinder had seized out. After a faff with that and sorting it i can now concentrate on a few other final mech issues, this being one on themI took some pics, hope you can shed light on what goes where as it was like this when i got itMuchos Gracias
rotoflex
I have been burned before assuming some similarities between Spitfire & GT6, but hopefully this will be one of the safe ones. The reverse light switch should be the one under the gear lever. The overdrive gearbox switch should be the one on the right hand side of the gearbox at the engine end, on the little standup bracket. The overdrive gear lever switch you can identify. The overdrive & reverse light are separate circuits. Ignore the overdrive first, & hook up the reverse light first, & to eliminate its components from the problem. The two wires to which the reverse light switch connect should be in the area, coming from parts unknown, hopefully grouped together. One should be solid green, & the other should be green with a brown stripe. Those are the wires to connect to the reverse light switch. If you find them, connect them.Put the car in reverse, turn the ignition switch to "on" (it's not necessary to start it), watch for smoke & be ready to switch off immediately in case something elsewhere is wired incorrectly, then run around back & see if the reverse lights are illuminated. Richard B
4536 wrote:Hiis the large brass/gold looking nut where the speedo cable attaches to the gearbox?Yes, on the drivers side. Does it have the angle drive fitted? The drive from the box points to the side of the car, the angle drive screws in and turns it through 90 degress so that it is pointing forward. jamiepeers
Not sure if i have the angled drive fitted as yet. You can just make out the speedo connection to the box in the last picIts an unknown to me as i'm pretty sure the car was initially bought with no overdrive, then retrofitted, or at least, started to be retrofitted.Looks like i'll have to get an angle drive too.By the way, where do all the electrical gubbins hide regrading overdrive relay etc etc?CheersJamie
rotoflex
Typically, the overdrive relay was mounted under the bonnet, on the firewall, next to the horn relay (like a mirror to the horn relay). On my left-hand-drive car, they are just above the brake master cylinder. jamiepeers
Again, this ends up being done in some spare time in fits and starts so i haven't commented in a while.Just thought i'd say i have sorted the OD wiring and relays now.All apears to work, at least in the sense that i get the audible OD solenoid click when in 3rd/4th with ignition on and the flick of the gear switch. The car isn't out on the open road yet so i can't really try it for real, unless i get her up on axle stands and do it that way - which i may do.Its really a very easily wired in system when you look at it. I think i was muddying the waters by being overly fussed on the many connectors in the system. If youi were to freshly wire it in yourself it becomes crystal clear. So a big thanks to all who helped out.Cheers, and onto the next "to do"
