Recommended Oil for TR6 with A type overdrive

HI
Can anyone please advise what is the best oil to use in the "A" type overdrive transmission in order to ensure good operation and durability.

The manual calls for GL4, which I think has a viscocity of 80 - 90.

I recall reading dire warnings not to use GL5 oil, as this contains additives that eat away at the phosphur bronze gearbox components.

I have had advice that GL4 is too viscous, resulting in delayed O/D clutch engagement, and poor long term durability.

I believe that the EP - extreme pressure - requirments of the lubricating oil are far less for a gearbox than a differential?

This source recommends racing specification engine oil (don't laugh - all "A" series engines shared the same oil - engine oil) or ATX - automatic transmission fluid.
Once again, there are quite a few vehicles that have used ATX in manual gearboxes (some Rovers and perhaps Ford Sierra?).

I would like smoother and quicker O/D engagement, but the LAST thing that I want to do is to replace the GL4 gear oil with something else and end up destroying the gearbox or overdrive. :o

I've always used GL4 EP90 with no problems, if it's slow to engage have you tried adjusting the solenoid/oil valve?

If you follow the procedure in the manual and use a drill bit to line up the two holes sometimes it doesn't give quite enough valve opening and you need to slightly over adjust to take up the wear in the system.
Otherwise it could be down to cone clutch wear or problems with the accumulator.
