mk3 GT6 restoration

C130

Recommended Posts

The subframe needs to be narrowed by around 100-150mm, driveshafts sleeved and cut to length plus a new bracket fabricated to hold the diff.

This is going to be powered by a 13b Renesis from the RX8 on carbs.

I'm certainly going to be watching this one then!

Will you use the 192 or 231PS engine?

This now raises a plethora of other questions regarding controlling the various ancillaries like the ignition, secondary shutter Valve and oil metering pump.

I had this discussion with Aston from Essex Rotary over a tasty beverage last month and we concluded that the earlier 12B or the Fuel injected 13B from the N/A RX7 FC would be easier to wire up.

As you can probably guess from my signature rotaries are a big interest of mine.

I spoke to Apex rotary that suggested using a carbed manifold and making a trigger wheel (or using an older generation front pulley with a pick up) then use a megasquirt or standalone system for ignition.

There was a suggestion to use an earlier fromt cover plate with a distributor drive but I feel that is a step going backwards as a strong spark (in my mind) alomg with good fuelling and oil pressure is key to longevity. If it lasts 80k miles I will be happy.

Going for a 231

Agreed on the Ignition...
My RX8 has the ignition system upgraded to this

Much better than the stock setup

Another recommendation would be a Sohn adaptor, that way you can run fully synthetic oil in the engine and proper 2 stroke oil through the metering pump

Have a nose on the RX8 owners club forum, there's some good people on there who will offer good advice on all things rotary

Prop or driveshafts? Drive shafts look like they are steel, they will be cut and sleeved.

I didn't know that about the Prop shaft- may pose a bit of an issue, fortunately I have a few friends I can draw on their composite experience. If it cannot be shortened then I will look for a steel one and fit adaptors at either end.

Sorry yes I mean prop shaft.
The prop on an rx8 is carbon fibre and it looks like the ujs on each end are bonded into the tube. I think if you can get it out of one end you should be able to rebond it somehow, although working with composites other than a bit of glass fibre is beyond my skill set lol

Next time I am under my rx8 I'll take some pics for you.

Keeping the CF prop will be a bit of a talking point. May have to figure out a solution!

I am really impressed with the RX8 suspension (aside from bi-metallic corrosion from screwing steel bolts into an alloy hub that won't come out!!!) I am really considering one as a family car. Superb machine!

I am on the look out for a Renesis 13b and 6sp box, so if you happen across a cheap one on offer on any of the rotary forums please let me know.

Just had a chat with one of my rotary guys and the 5 Speed Prop is steel and is a straight swap for the Carbon on the 6Spd, so might be easier to work with.  Good thing is the second hand spares for the 8 are plentiful and quite cheap.
A fresh built engine from one of the specialists would be about £3.5K tho
I'll keep my eyes open for a good used one
Gearbox should be about 150

Where abouts are you in the UK?  There's a couple of places I can recommend for second hand spares etc.

As you mentioned Apex Rotary I'm guessing you are around the Surrey area.
