Ben Hutchings
My MK1 has a radial on a 4.5j spare. It’s always been a bit haphazardly put in, sitting at an angle. Today while fiddling around, I managed to break the previous owner’s DIY retaining hook/bolt/wingnut thing. Does anyone have a picture of how the wheel is suppose to be stowed, and if possible info about how they came from factory? I’d like to see how it’s ‘supposed’ to be done before making my own mods. Cheers!
Paudman
On mine, it's a hook / loop fitting. The loop is screwed through the boot floor with suitable reinforcement, then a hook is clipped on with a threaded section that sticks up through the wheel centre, and is tightened using a huge washer and nut. The wheel lies flat on three rubber pads and you can use the entire inner part for storage of essential tools etc.

FloydP
I don’t know if the above picture helps, I can’t get to mine at the moment, but it’s not standard anyway as I have a tapped block welded to the boot floor with a stud that goes through a wheel stud hole. Ben Hutchings
Thanks Colin & Floyd, I hadn't through to look at the parts catalog! What's pictured there is pretty much the setup I had before breaking the threaded hook (which looked VERY DIY to me). I've ordered a stainless eyelet/stud/large-winged-nut to replace the broken bit. Already have the huge washer. Colin: These "three rubber pads" you mention, are they something you've added?I'll try and get hold of some closed-cell foam or something to do the job. FloydP
I don’t have rubber pads on the floor of mine but it is covered in dynamat to try and cut down the exhaust noise resonating through the boot floor and that pretty much does the same thing. I added the dynamat before the 2016 rbrr but had an accident with the engine at silverstone before the run, so don’t no how effective it’ll be. Cheers, Floyd. Tim Bancroft
Those three pads are, I think, standard....my mk2 had them, a long time ago. I am probably wrong though.............................!
Ben Hutchings
Hi ordered some bits to make up a stainless hook, came to £6 I think. Works well as a straight replacement for the original when user with the original huge washer thing:
Paudman
Quoted from Hutch- Colin: These "three rubber pads" you mention, are they something you've added?I'll try and get hold of some closed-cell foam or something to do the job. No, they were standard fitting to the GT6 to prevent both noise and scuff / vibration damage. Just three flat rubber pads equally spaced around where the tyrewall would rest. If I can find a photo I'll oblige.
