yorkshire_spam
Title says it all really. I'd like to temporarily fit an oil temp gauge to the car, mostly to see what effect it has when I plumb the oil cooler in. So where's the best place to fit the sender?I guess having a boss brazed into the sump side would be the favorite?
RobPearce
A sender in the sump will give you some idea of the bulk oil temperature in the region of the sender. That's not really what you're interested in. My brother had one in the sump drain plug hole on his Spitfire and it was next to useless. The best place from a usefulness perspective is probably just after the oil filter - if you have a cooler then the return hose is good. On the 6 cylinder engine there's a big aluminium plug just above the filter, which would be a good place. The tricky thing is to find somewhere it will go in easily without restricting flow.If you only want it temporarily... that's a bit tricky. JohnD
For a temporary oil temp gauge, you can get one in the tip of a dipstick!Standard on some VWs, made by VDO: https://www.google.co.uk/searc.....JJ8AKHWp0DcEQgjYIjwQJohn
yorkshire_spam
Love the dip-stick sensor! But I've already got a screw-in one. Thanks for the tips guys. I'd like to fit it prior to piping in the cooler for comparison purposes. I'll mull it over.Cheers, Sam
