Alternative Alternator Wiring

Hi All,

I have just done a search and cannot find ref my question below which surprises me as I expected it would be a common question. There is lots of stuff about the Alternator change but not the wiring unless I have searched using the wrong question, if so does someone have a link explaining what is required.

Would I be correct if replacing the early Alternator with the later type all I need to do is to connect the thick brown wire to the new alternator and connect the brown/purple to the alternator ( Ignition warning lamp ). All I will need to then do is to disconnect ( unplug ) the relay control box on the inner right wing. I will of course make sure that the plug from the relay control box is insulated with tape. Sounds a bit too easy or am I missing something ( apart from many brain cells ).

Many thanks,  Don Kennedy

I made no mention of a dynamo, obviously a “visual” typo but the question still applies,

sorry Don, I didn't read your post carefully enough!  I'm not sure of the answer having not done this conversion myself (but Colin aka scrapman has recently!).  A browse at a later wiring diagram should help - late alts are simple - big brown wires to solonoid/battery, smaller (brown + purple flash?) to warning lamp.

you may find a bit of re-looming in order if your batt or warning lamp wires go through the reg box.

Don

I assume we're talking 11acr to 18 acr? If so, there's four existing wires to the old alternator, the thick brown wire to the centre large terminal, the brown/yellow to the small terminal, the other 2 wires cut and tape up, unplug wires from 4tr control box and discard box, tape up wires, remove ignition control box, connect  the brown/yellow wire to the brown/purple wire the ignition light should now come on, if it works cut the rest of the wires and tape up.

I converted 15ac to 17acr.

All totally reversible.

I made a new heavy brown cable, unplugged the original one from the 4-way plastic connector thingy, and plugged in the new cable.

Taped the original alternator plugs to the loom.

Unplugged the regulator and plugged a new signal wire into plug from the oldregulator box and into the back of the new alternator.

Then wrapped a bit of tape round the rest to keep the plug clean.

Cheers

Colin
