GazaGt6
when i bought the car, the seats were in a bit of a poor state, and fortunatley seat covers came with the car! (marked gt6 mk11 on the box). so i decided to strip the drivers seat from its nasty leather and started to recover them. i thhen realised the foam was crubmling into little pieces and had evn been stuffed with newspaper and wood!!! :( , so i needed new foam, so west country triumph said they would do it, so they ordered the foam, it arrived and was in 30 different pieces! after a while they said to that it was to complicated. so they recommended a person, so i took them round and he said it would cost £200 for labour (which i thought was fairly steep.) so they have been left with them for 2 weeks and he rang today and said, the seat covers were wrong, the foam was wrong so i want very happy! (cud of told me that 2 weeks ago) so now i dont no what to do, i could:1. somehow get some original mk2 seats.2. get mk3 seats (dont no if they will fit)3. by some more foam (another £150) along with the right seat covers (£200)can u think of any suggestions to get me out of this jam?? i havent been able to drive it for over a month!!!! im going insane!Cheers Garry
GT6boy
A guy near me does car upholstry- best bit? He's got a white mk3 GT6! :D PM me for details. I would suggest you cast a look over the work he did on his car 1st, then see how much he might be looking to charge. I've not had work done by him, but i'm sure letting him look at what you have would be a good starting point. His is a small concern, so i'm sure the over heads would be low. Mk 3 seat should fit. But not as funky. Buy some more foam? I think not!
Deleted User
Are you near us Gaza? Just you're using Westcountry Triumph who are only just down the road. In Calne there's a specialist foam supplier with a Classic car nut in the upholstery department. He's done some good work on cars - there was one example in the company car park when I was last there. Might be worth an ask, pm me if you want the details. Mac
Hi Gaza,30 bits of foam sounds a bit wierd to me. I just changed the seat base on mine (early car) and sorted the baskets. Seat base was one piece. Only prob i had was figuring out how to tie baskets to frames. Considered taking 'em to pro but did ok on me own in the end. Deleted User
GazaJust finished recovering a low back seat on a GT6 Mk1 whilst it's certainly not the easiest job around i did manage to get a reasonable result. The foams i bought were from Rimmer and there are a few (12 per side i think) and the covers also came from Rimmer, the instructions are about what you would expect so there is a certain amount of creative thought that needs to go into it but it is certainly a job that can be tackled (first recover job for me). At least this way you can save a few pounds now you have to fork out for new covers etc.
GT6boy
Been to see the guy today, now works from home in Westerleigh(even closer to me). Provided you have the correct seat covers(i reckon you do), he thinks he could fit the existing foam- approx £100-150? understandably, it was a bit difficult to pin him down on such a 'how long is a piece of string' issue. but that doesn't seem unreasonable, given the time he may have to spend. If you wanted to pop down with the stuff ,we could agree what you have/don't have, then nip over and see him- it's up to you. 8) His contact details are : K+J Upholstery 01454 326927. Incidentally, he sold the GT6 last year. He bought it shed-like for £1800, spent a small fortune restoring it himself. Last year he had some running problems with the new engine(sounded like ignition and fuel vapourisation), then got fed up and sold it on. Someone got a bargain. He should have percevered. GazaGt6
sounds good, £100-150 sounds reasonable, but the seat cover i have, although they say GT6 mk2 they are no were near the same shape as the originals, but look like the mk3 gt6 without the headrests. very confusing, because the old seats were realy cool, they sort of looked like the seats on the mk1, from what i can see on the picture. (above) but these covers dont have the shape in them, i think they are really craply made or they are not right for the car. but it might be worth seeing if there right or not by showing you or the guy in Westerliegh. i think the guy who has the seats now is trying to get hold of some people to see if they no any better, so we shall see. :(CheersGarry
GazaGt6
here are the covers and the originals seats, the picture of the cover is from parklane classics and is exactly the same as mine, but are for a Mk3's, this might mean i have the wrong seat covers? but as u can see they are completly wrong!! has anyone got pictures of mk2 seat covers? it would be very interesting to see if they are any different.Regards Garry
heraldcoupe
Is it just me, or do those look like Spitfire seat covers?Cheers,Bill.
GazaGt6
they were named as GT6 mk3 on their website, but the spitfire and the Mk3 seat covers might not differ that much.RegardsGarry
CharlieB
Have you looked at the Newton Commercial website ?http://newtoncomm.co.uk/brochures/triumph/gt6-mkI-mkII.pdfCharlie
GT6boy
Think i'm right in saying all the mk3 GT6 seats were recliners. Is yours fixed upright? If your assemblys are fixed, then it shouldn't be a two piece cover surely? certainly the squab(bum) cushion cover looks like a Spitfire IV/GT6 mk3 item. They had defined sides abutting the transmission cover, where-as the earlier GT6 mk1-2 squabs utilised a padded piece of metal, screwed to the transmission cover, which acted as the bolster. GazaGt6
no mine are recliners, not fixed upright. here are my seats, dont no bout that piece of metal screwed to the transmission cover?? dont rememeber that, this is my seat and the foam arrangement. Nobody sells covers for them in New Tan w/perforated pleats, though, so I guess I'll have to bite the bullet & do them in leather to mentally compensate for losing the perfs.Edit:529 pounds for leather covers at Newton! I take it back! I take it back!
CharlieB
You might try http://www.pjm-motors.co.uk/ for leather covers. I've only bought Spit leather headrest covers from them but they were a very good price.Charlie
GT6boy
Any news? An overview: the mk1-2(up to KC75030 had the non reclining seats, as shown in Rfarmery before/after pic. Looking at that picture, you can see that both before/after seats don't have a bolster abutting the transmission tunnel. This is where the padded piece of metal sits, effectively acting as the bolster. These handed padded pieces of metal can be seen in your library B+W picture of the non-recling seats. The seat squab also had a pronounced extension beyond the side bolster. At KC75031(1969?), the seat became a reclining affair. Totally different cover arrangement, now two piece, not one. The padded pieces of metal were still screwed to the transmission tunnel, but the new reclining chair now had a bolster both sides. The mk3 seat were slightly different again(recliners still, but they did tilt forward!). There we are- dead easy! ::)
GazaGt6
steady progress being made on the seats, the we have the right seat faom as i sent the B+W picture of my seat (from newton commercial) and he seems to think the faom is the same, so thats a start, i think i am going to get the proper seat covers from newtons, there bout £290 or somethin along those lines but its worth spending the money on the seats as its the main piece of the interior and after recarpeting it all i think that extra bit of money will be more than worth while, for some reason the seat frames have been restored, and painted black, but havent bothered to recover them. havent ordered them yet but when i do, i will probably give them a week to come then, al give them to the guy who has them now as im sure he is capable of doing a better job than me!! fitting them will take a couple of weeks, it took two weeks for him to tell me the cover were not right!!! then have them back in the car by end of april!regards Garry
GT6boy
Right-come on: time for someone to do the decent thing. If I had a spare drivers seat, you could use it temporarily. Hands up, who's got a spare knackered GT6 seat that GazaGT6 can loan out? You'll be weened off Triumph, its so long since you've driven it, if you're not careful.... :o
GazaGt6
i will never be weened of triumph!!!! i dont give in easily, but the lack of seats means i cant, get estimates on resprays, see how the car is actually running, as i have only been from reading area to mine in it. so im losing out, but i am a very patient person :). im sure when its all done, it will all be worth it!
